So you want to expend young inexpensive assets, block 2 of your best young prospects, and have a massively expensive 3C for a team that already is top 5 in GA? That is not a wise expenditure of assets or cap space.
On spending young assets, yeah I'm willing if the price is right. Graves is someone I'd be willing to lose, as he's a 3rd pairing guy once Byram gets a little time under his belt. I don't love losing him, but I would be okay with it to bring in more forward depth. Compher too, as I think he's a bit overpaid, and Kaut is fine, as we're probably looking at a fourth liner on a deep team. Trading any of them for a guy that helps now and for the next 6 years is okay with me, so long as Danault is reasonable with his contract demands.
I'm also okay with a highly paid 3C, as I just don't view it like that. The team can afford two second line centers, and that's what Danault would be. Newhook can play wing with Kadri and move to the middle later in his career. That seems to be Colorado's MO anyway.
Personally I think building two second lines is a great way to use cap space, especially when the team has an affordable but very talented back end. I love that one of those lines could be a great shutdown line as well. You don't go after a Domi to play 3C, but a Danault makes a lot of sense to me.
All that said, I'm in favor of convincing Hall to sign for less than he's probably worth. All assets stay and you add the best player available. If that doesn't work out though, I think this would definitely be something I'm open to.
