Trying out Different Trades

Description
ARI Trade: I acknowledge that Stepan can still play but he is way overpaid for his current production. Assuming that the Coyotes will go after Hall and need more cap space, would they be willing to give up a 1st to move Stepan? The 1st would be lottery protected which would prevent added risk if they end up missing the playoffs next year.

NYR Trade: The Rangers are another team looking to clear cap. Would they be willing to give a 1st to clear over $5 mil in cap space? Detroit could also buyout Staal so he could return to the Rangers.

EDM Trade: Not sure if the value is right on this trade so I might need to add some picks going either way but I thought it was an interesting idea. Edmonton and Detroit have already made several trades since Holland took over in Edmonton.

I also signed Erik Gustafsson, Dylan DeMelo, and Cam Talbot. Gustafsson could take a short term deal and cash out which most good teams would be able to afford right now. He would get top minutes in Detroit and could add to his value even more before signing a long term deal next year. DeMelo would give us a solid defensive defenceman. He would likely be traded at the deadline but could help ease Seider into the NHL. Talbot would be a similar signing to what Bernier was 2 years ago and give us 2 capable goalies.

Can't buy someone out to resign with their old team. When it happened for Brooks Orpik the NHL investigated heavily and found that it was never Washington's plan

Detroit could just hold on to him then.

I think you're about 2.5 mill over cap if you don't buy him out
Edit: sorry less than that but close to cap I think

We'd still have about $500k in cap I think. If we kept him, we wouldn't sign 2 defenceman though.

Not sure what your point is. He would definitely be good enough to get minutes for us but I thought the Rangers might want him back. If you're laughing at the value, I don't think it's unrealistic for almost $6 mil in cap to take a 1st round pick to dump, but maybe the Wings could send a mid-round pick back.

Well aside from the fact that the move you described is cap circumvention. Rangers have no incentive to send a 1st for Staal nor bring him back after dealing him. If Rangers are moving Staal it'd be for a similar cap dump (Sutter/Perreault/Steen/Backes/etc).

I didn't realize that was illegal. I thought the Rangers might want to clear cap to go after some big free agents but if it doesn't make sense for them the Red Wings could take a similar dump from another team.

Yeah that's not really the Rangers m.o. after last offseason, 8 of the top 9 is already in place, they're good on goaltending for a long time, and they have most of their defense in place. Rangers probably only go for bottom 6/bottom pair pieces in free agency if at all.

I'd look at the Isles for a team that actually needs to shed salary

Islanders are definitely another team that needs to shed salary. Komarov, Clutterbuck, and/or Hickey could probably be dumped for a 2nd/3rd. Boychuk has the same contract remaining as Loui Eriksson who will be dumped for probably a 1st+3rd or Demko+2nd. I could see Detroit looking at Boychuk because he would also provide leadership and be a mentor towards Seider. I don't think Andrew Ladd's contract will be touched though.

I think an Arizona Stepan trade would work though as Arizona only has $1.5 mil in cap space next season and they'll want to resign Hall. Stepan is by no means useless but is heavily overpayed.

It would be interesting. By no means do I think Detroit is looking to move Rasmussen and I think he could be a really solid 3C as soon as next season. If we were looking to trade for Puljujarvi I thought that could work though.
