2020-21

Team: 2020-21 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 15, 2020
Published: Jul. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
More than a few thoughts:

- I think Jarmo is way more creative than this. Moving Anderson (plus a defenseman?) is very likely for forward help. In this scenario, we will say two second round picks was the best offer.

- All RFA's were signed to their qualifying offers except for Anderson (trade), Lilja (KHL), and Shore (trade).

- With the flat cap, it may be more likely that Dubois signs a bridge deal. In this mock-up, I have Dubois signing a two year deal at $4.8M.

- The Riley Nash trade could be to any destination. Nash is probably slightly easier to move than Wennberg at this point but neither will be in high demand.

- It's no secret that Tortorella likes to play all four lines. He also (usually) does not play a conventional "4th line". In this scenario, the Foudy-Wennberg-Robinson line is more than a checking line and could see a rise in minutes depending on the game and situation.

- Nathan Gerbe and Kevin Stenlund are the early favorites for the 13th forward spot.

- I expect both Texier and Foudy to get a shot at the second line center spot at some point during the season but for now I have Grigorenko penciled in there.

- No matter how you slice it, a defenseman has to be moved. I have Murray being moved but it could realistically be anyone except for Jones, Werenski, Gavrikov (and maybe Peeke?).

- Dean Kukan and Markus Nutivaara are interchangeable on the third pair.

- Elvis Merzlikins and Joonas Korpisalo play the 1A-1B system.

- In this mock-up, the club has ample cap space ($5M+) to make a significant upgrade to their forward ranks near the trade deadline if in the position to do so.

I’d rather keep Nash and dump Wennberg. His buyout is only 500k. I’d also move Foudy to 3rd like center or send him to the AHL. Don’t waste his season on the 4th line. Jenner would be a better 4th line wing then he would.

I noted that neither Nash nor Wennberg would be in high demand. Buying out a 25-year old center is a bit of an overreaction in my opinion. Maybe they can't move either of them and they become the 12/13th forward. Time will tell.

I don't see Foudy playing on the 4th line as a "waste". It would perhaps be more unfair to task him with duties as a center than on the wing to get acclimated to NHL play. You'll recall Pierre-Luc Dubois started his career as a 4th line winger and transitioned to center in a short time. Perhaps that becomes the case with Foudy as well. I also noted in my description that just because Foudy is listed on the 4th line in this Armchair-GM, does not mean he will be given typical 4th-line minutes. Every NHL roster and lineup is a fluid thing and this could merely be the start of the the 2020-2021 season. Nothing is set in stone.

As noted in my description, it could be any team. I happened to choose the Oilers in this mock-up. With a flat cap, I'm sure every team's financial situation will be tricky.

Wennberg has be AWFUL for Columbus offensively and is 100% not worth the 4.9 mil when he’s only 500k agains the cap. A savings of 4.4 mil. Nash as a 4th line center is at least worth the 2.75 for his defensive game and leadership. Wennberg and torts aren’t getting along, they really haven’t been for 3 years, time to get get rid of him and move on, he isn’t going to get back to his 59 point self in Columbus.

Yes, playing Foudy on the 4th line is a waste. He played this season and played 2nd line just fine. Put him with 2 of Folingo or Nyqvist or Atkinson and he will be just fine on the 3rd line and will probably be 2nd line be the end of the year. Also if you remember back to when PLD played LW he was pretty bad and didn’t really do anything except get benched. They moved him to center with Panarin and Atkinson and he took off. Foudy has NHL experience, don’t baby him.

We will have to agree to disagree here I suppose. Good thing neither of us are in charge!
