Description
This is the cap-dumping version of the 20/21 Pens. Everyone will scream BS!

Trades
1.
PIT
  1. 2020 4th round pick (OTT)
  2. 2020 5th round pick (TBL)
Additional Details:
OTT needs to fill out their defense and won't be a playoff team for another two or three years. Stocking their cupboard should still be a priority. While Johnson is not good, $1.625 will not impact OTT and they can always bury him. Getting a solid bottom-six projected young player I think is worth the hit for a couple of years compared to other bad contracts teams will try and lay off on them.
OTT
  1. Björkqvist, Kasper
  2. Johnson, Jack ($1,625,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Penguins save a little money and free up a spot.
2.
PIT
  1. 2020 2nd round pick (BUF)
  2. 2020 4th round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
Bjugstad can be a solid middle-six player for a year. Murray can be their goalie of the future. However, I'm unsure if Ullmark is viewed as a good back-up or their future starter, so that would clearly change this trade idea.

OTT declines.
Penguins aren't trading Murray, not for that.

I think Buffalo declines Ullmark was really solid this year and Bjugstad isn’t very good.

Carter Hutton save percentage with vision issues .888
Matt Murray save percentage .899

That Ottawa trade is LAUGHABLY bad. Giving up picks for a possible bottom 6er and a cap dump. And the justification is that other teams will try and dump worse contracts. YES that is the point of taking on cap dumps. But you're meant to recieve assets in exchange for taking on the dead weight. Maybe add your 2021 1st rounder.

Bjugstad is a decent middle six player and you guys need to fill out your roster a bit. When healthy is provides a pretty sound game.

Murray had a weird year, but he's going to be a starter wherever he goes. Is he a fit for you guys? I really think so, but who knows.

Him and Ullmark would compete for the starting job, but they have to figure out what they are doing with Hutton. It’s not worth losing two picks that would leave them with only 4 picks in this years draft.

Here's a few realities....

-Teams like OTT, LA and DET are going to take on some bad contracts for futures. Now, could they take on worse contracts than $1.625 for three years and get better futures? Absolutely and they very well might, but a modest cap hit for a player they can easily bury and get a decent young cheap bottom six? Doesn't seem THAT laughable.

-You have to give SOMETHING back in a trade, so mid/late round picks for OTT is nothing when they are so loaded in the first three rounds. Make it a 5th only, I don't care.

-OTT has to fill out their defense and they're obviously not going hunting for any big names yet. By the time they are Johnson's contract will be but a dream.

I guess it comes down to options. I don't know if Buffalo is going to be looking regardless. Ullmark is a decent goalie, but will new management look to make a few big splashes? Maybe.

And here is the reality for Pittsburgh. There are other Defencemen that would round out Ottawa's defence that they could take on as a cap dump after walking away from this trade, and they would get a better return for taking on said contract. No team takes that deal, and if you don't make that deal, the pens are over the cap... The team taking on the cap has the leverage.

Probably not, it sounds like the Peguals want to be significantly under the cap this year.

Again, I'm not saying there aren't better deals for OTT to make, but no team is going to give a 1st round for taking a $1.625M contract. Also, getting that return and that low of a cap hit allows them room take on more crap contracts for bigger returns. I can get on board thinking that the deal could be tweaked, but you're way off base thinking it's laughable. Smaller dumps they take on = lower returns. As much leverage as any team has there are still realities to what they can get in return.

Now, if the Pens were sending him over without any retention? I could see them pressing for a 1st or 2nd. Taking on contract that's barely over 1.5M? I think you underestimate being able to fill out your roster with good bottom six players, especially young cheap ones. Bjorkvist is projected to be a damn solid role player.

When I suggested the 1st I had missed that it was 1/2 retained. With retention it definitely can be lower than a 1st. I think they'd still be able to leverage a 2nd or 3rd from the pens because of the necessity of making the deal though.

I can see a 3rd. Bjorkvist was a 2nd round pick, so I believed that was better than a 3rd. His entry to the NHL was slowed by some injuries, but he seems to be right back on track.

Johnson ($1.625M ret), Björkqvist for 4th, 5th

Stop people, seriously, you are literally just embarrassing yourselves. Burying Johnson in the minors would cost the Pens $2.175M next year, $2.125M after that. So to save $500K/yr

$500K...

You are trading away Bjorkqvist.

And remember... Johnson is guy that the coaches actually like... trading away Bjorkqvist to save $500K

Accept it. Move on. You'll be happier for it.

I think you have a serious reading comprehension problem or you just rushed through this and didn't really read thoroughly. I'm hoping it's the latter.

Neither I nor anyone else suggested the Penguins bury Johnson in the minors, so it's clear you just felt like flaming someone instead of having a an actual discussion.

I'm just going to copy/past most of your post since it works...

I think you have a serious reading comprehension problem or you just rushed through this and didn't really read thoroughly. I'm hoping it's the latter.

"I" suggested burying him in the minors as the alternative to your giving away a player to save only $500K cap, even when the coaches like Johnson... so it's clear you just felt like flaming someone instead of having a an actual discussion.

Don't come up with such bad ideas and you won't have to over react when someone points out how it is bad.
