It seems a little counter-intuitive to make such a deal forwards-for-forwards, when the Leafs back end needs a lot of improvement. Also, I wouldn't characterize Strome as a type of 3C the Leafs need. Think more of Scott Laughton. Strome is too offensive and although he is young and will hopefully develop into a good 2C, asking him to do what the Leafs basically asked Kerfoot to do this past year, could end terribly.

Interesting take.

My opinion is that there isn't really much reason for either team to do this, both teams probably like their players better, but it's close in reality.

I would not say it's not close. Nylander alone is closer in value to both the Blackhawks combined then 2-for-2 equaling each other other. The only way you truly get fair value on Nylander is if you get pack a futures type package for him, but in reality, the Leafs should be looking for offense-for-defense swap, where minimizing potential offense results in maximizing (hopefully) defense and overall defensive play.

From an expected points percentage it is close, Dylan Strome (this year .65 ppg) Kubalik (.67 PPG) x 82 games = 109 points over 82 games

Nylander .86 ppg + AJ .48 ppg x 82 games= 111 over 82 games.

I would not make that deal.

Hmm it's not bad but I feel Strome+Murphy with a 3rd would be better. Kubulik is good but with Toronto needing a rhd partner for rielly I could see Dubas targeting Murphy instead. The 3rd just makes the value even. Worries well as Kerfoot can move to lw and we can see

Hyman-Matthews-Marner
Kerfoot-Tavares-Kapenan
Mikehev-Strome-Engvall
Barbanov-Gauthier-Spezza

Rielly-Murphy
Muzzin-Holl

Value is there, but toronto has 2 super star centers under contract for 4 years. They have no need to give up very good assets for a center. They keep nylander

There's no world where trading Nylander makes sense. What Makes a player important that's not a 10+ million dollar player is how they work with the depth of the team. Nylander slots in as a temporary 2nd line C if JT or Matthews gets hurt. Nylander is a very talented winger who can play centre and is a super hard worker who puts in a ton of effort. (One of the players mentioned he shows up 25 min before practice so he can practice before practice.) He loves this team, he's dedicated, He's talent and he's the key to their depth along with Kapanen. That's why Dubas told him they aren't in the business of trading talent. They need him. As much as so many Leafs fans hate talent and skill they built the team you guys want them to trade all our assets for over and over for over 50 years. It didn't work then and it won't work now. Stop.
