After an Ideal offseason

Created by: jjkhairaELTE99
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 16, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is an off-season after they reach 2nd round/WCF (which is a realistic benchmark with Leon and Connor on separate lines.

As always, open for constructive criticism and debate

Chiasson and Russel are people that clearly need to be traded (no sure what you'd be able to get for them). Since there is no compliance buyout coming, neal would need to be bought either this offseason or next. I'm just doing this year for the purpose of this post. Then re-signing guys like bear and benning then signing/re-signing bottom 6 pieces that will be bargain bin due to a flat cap

All those contracts and trades are pretty spot on in value, aside from the Ennis deal. Thats a little too much term and money for a guy realistically on the end of his career. OBviously he had a great year this season, and if he wants to cash in one last time, I don't think it would be the Oilers giving him that contract. With Yams, Nurse, Nuge all needing contracts in the next 2 years, that money is better off elsewhere. SO it comes down to Ennis's decision. Play with his hometown team for another year or 2 on a reasonable deal, or get a little more money elsewhere.

Reasonable roster though!

I do like this as a Devils fan as we need a vet to play stopgap and mentor to Ty Smith and Bahl the real problem with the trade is that I don't think Russell waives his NMC.

my idea is you hold on to benning to give time to bouchard, lagesson, and broberg cause kenny holland is known for over sesoning prospects in the minor or over-seas. plus stats say that he one of the better bottom pair dmen in the league. I personally would qualify him and see what the market is for him but I signed him knowing holland want to keep benning. if anything he can be lost in the seattle expansion draft after another year or two in edmonton

probably. I just don't see the oil moving 2 roster dmen in the same offseason and Russel's contract is something that has to be moved out. and I am pretty sure he would waive his nmc because of the ice time he'd get in NJ and be a lockerroom leader for the young players coming through their system. PLus NJ is going to be a team with something to prove next year. I do agree that the amount is not ideal but, I would pay a little more to keep benning then grab somebody new that isn't familiar with the systems and dynamics of the team. Better to go with what you know then gamble on somebody that you don't. In no way am I saying Benning is there long-term. I just think it would be good to keep him for a year of two as a good placeholder for the upcoming dmen in the system.

I think he will cause NJ is on the come up and he will get ice time there unlike in edmonton cause of the guys coming up in the system. NJ management would like a deal like this too because next year he is only being paid 2,500,000 including bonuses in actual cash so ownership will be saving some money, even more so if they wait until july 1st and his bonuses are paid. Plus they would be getting a 3rd round pick to handle the cap hit for a year (which is fine cause this offseason there are no expensive signings needed to be done). Its a win win for both sides as edm need the space now and NJ will have the space again in time to sign Hughes.

I don't think PK resigns with the Devils at least not at that price and his contract expires when we have to pay Hughes. So money is not an issue for the Devils.

Russell's $1M bonus was paid on July 1st - more than 2 weeks ago. He gets paid $1.5M next season.

Then NJ would be pretty happy to take such a deal when they pay so little cash and have tons of cap space as is. Given that ownership of most teams is trying to cut spending where they can this deal works nicely for both parties. Might even be able to have a sweetener that is not as high as a 3rd round after all.

Honestly I don't think Holland would have any trouble moving Russell for a 5th. No sweetener required.

would really help with the cap problems to come. Looking at it now, it would make more sense to buyout neal after next year just so that as his space becomes dead cap the oil regain dead space from the pouliot, sekera, and gryba buyouts.
