I figured Guentzel could go on a line with either Mac or Drai to split them up. Rutherford seems to be in a trade guys for lesser guys and prospects(Kessel trade), and this trade fits that genre. Bring the criticism

Pit needs scorers over centers. This trade sets them back. The value is almost irrelevant. I don't think it's right either but it's closer than the bigger problem being solveable.

Why would the Pens do this? I realize that in video games the computer will allow trades if the value is okay, but it never looks at the why of a trade. But, why would Pittsburgh make this trade?

But overall, no, the value is not close at all. Edmonton needs to add, considerably. Guentzel is a year and a half younger, signed for 4 more years as opposed to 1, and is frankly the better player on the ice. adding a maybe top-10 Edmonton prospect dose not cross the chasm that is the difference in value. Then you can consider RNH's great track record of leadership and carrying his team to a playoff winning culture. Um... Try adding Yamamoto or Bouchard.

Even then, I doubt that the Pens actually do this because Guentzel is good, he works with either Crosby or Malkin, on either wing, and he plays with passion.

... and no one wants Yakupov2.0, Puljujarvi.

I can see Edmonton adding a lot more to the table if they want Guentzel and his playoff magic if they lose in round 1 this year

I'd say maybe oilers would have to add a 1st to go through and pens send back a 2nd or 3rd in a couple of years time. This is the issue with Nuge being one of the most criminally underrated players in the league. Normally I would say a defensive prospect plus a 2nd would with your ask gets it done but, nuge just doesn't get market respect even though the last 3 seasons he's been at a per full-season pace of 29G 41A 70pts

The last 3 years hes had a average scoring rate of 29/82 game season and is a high quality two-way player that has been mostly on the wing for the last 2 years. As an oilers fan I'd be happy with keeping nuge for his two-way game mized with high scoring over a one-dimensional player like JG

This is very fair. I think both players help their respective teams more.

if the oilers are somehow still having a scoring problem with yamamoto consistently in the lineup, I can see a pick and a dman prspect being traded to get a mid 6 quality player that can get top 6 numbers with mcdavid (assuming AA does not work out). Maybe a guy like kapanen, duclair, or Kreider?

Edm certainly needs depth scoring but they also need a bunch of things. Imagine trading Hall for a defensemen and still not having any idea if you even helped sure up your defense years later.

no kidding. I think that the dcore has kinda gotten to be league average which is enough. the real focus should be on strengthening the supoorting cast of the stars, have an average bottom six and decent goaltending

IMO Duclair and Kreider are untouchable, but Kapanen would be perfect

@HabsFan9 As a Pens fan, this is not the type of trade we would even remotely entertain. Guentzel is too good. The value is tipped on our side, as the playoff performances mixed with the chemistry with our top 6 is almost unquantifiable.

RNH is a fine enough player, but you can't think he'll just slot in and put up similar numbers with our top 6, as many noticeable players have attempted to do that and failed in the last 5 years. (Most notably Perron, but also Brassard, Galchenyuk, and Pearson.)

So no, the value is not commensurate, because of how highly we value Guentzel in hawse.

So, if you just look at their numbers, Guentzel is clearly a better player (on paper) at this point in his career (40 goal, 76 point season both higher than anything RNH has ever done. Playoff numbers are disgusting) is younger, and is valued by the organization even higher than his awesome numbers suggest.

You were right EDM would have to bring MUCH more to the table if they wanted to pry Jakey Boy away and I just don't see Rutherford even picking up the phone if Holland calls him about it, tbh.

With all due respect you are over valuing Guentzel. He may be the better player (even that could be debated, as they play significantly different roles on their teams), but Yammo or Bouchard as well? ...unless you are trying to overstate your point.
