Realistic Cap Outlook

Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 17, 2020
Published: Jul. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the $81.5m flat cap, it's likely the Oilers are going to seek bridge deals on the majority of their FAs. Just proving that money's going to be tight moving forward.

No Ennis. No Puljujarvi. No Benning. No Smith.

We're a cap team without them. Taylor Hall is a pipe dream, people!

If Holland can't move any cap out in the offseason, I think he'll buyout Neal. It creates $3.8M in cap space which, added to the $1M you have already should be enough to upgrade your 3C and 2G substantially.

Should be able to trade neal retaining roughly the same as buy out cost but avoid adding term to the buyout penalty. 4 million for neal really wouldn’t be too bad at all and should find a taker. He’s an excellent pp specialist I could see a team like Ottawa interested considering cost certainty threw flat cap.

That would be fine with me. But the premise of my comment was if he can't move cap out. I think moving Neal with 33% retained qualifies as moving cap out.

BTW, which teams do you think would be interested in Neal at $3.8M x 3?

Ottawa because they will have a lot of depth down the middle coming up and neal could flip between wings and really help them build a strong pp just as he did with Edmonton. He’s also a great vet in terms of his conditioning and professionalism. I think the biggest problem with neal is people still judge him based on his year with Calgary which isn’t right he was coming off multiple very short offseasons with Nashville and Vegas miracle run. I thought this season he reclaimed a lot of him self but around here I think if you play on a team with Conner and leon whatever you do gets credited to them so trading him on this site I think is significantly harder than in reality.

Prior to the CGY year Neal had 10 straight 20+ goal season's. This year he was at 19 in 55 games when the season ended with 11 games left. And he played for at least a month on a broken toe.

If a team wants a goal scoring, net-front guy for under $4M, he's a pretty sure bet.

If we decide to keep Neal then 2 other players that I think we could move are Russell and Chiasson. Like Neal, I think Russell holds move value in the “real” NHL world then on this site. If we retained 1M on Russell then a team that is short on cash would only be paying 500k for a bonifide third pair DMan who can play both sides, blocks shots and who is very good on the PK. A top contender would love a guy like Chiasson it be on their team. That would save us 5.15M right there in cap to go after a 3 C and upgrade our backup goaltender

Retention works as a percentage. If you retain 25% of the contract, that's 25% of cap hit and 25% of salary, even if those amounts aren't equal.

So in this case

25% of $4M = $1M, new team takes a cap hit of $3M
25% of $1.5M = $375k, new team pays $1.125M salary

Still a very good deal.

I don’t like the idea of dealing russell he’s exactly the type of depth d would want come playoffs. Can play both sides slide up and down line up perfect plug in the event of injuries also keeping him is like setting 4 million aside for an offseason in which will actually need that money more. Chaisson I like but is 100% expendable on this team now and.

Russel’s salary next year is 1.5M plus a 1M signing bonus. Since the bonus was paid on July 1 wouldn’t his salary be only 1.5M, therefore if we restrained 1M would bring it down to only 500k in actual cash being owed?

I agree Russell is a good depth player to have around but would you rather have him at a 4M cap hit or a bonafide 3C? I pick the 3C every time

Depends on the 3c I wouldn’t move russell just to free up room unless already had a deal in place for one that would be worth while. I believe Mcloed is an option that shouldn’t be overlooked as 3c he’s fast and very defensively responsible and will need a place to play next year considering it’s very hard to see AHL operating next year. Keep in mind he was a surprise at camp early this year and nearly made the team. If we can fill that roster spot internally that’s the best option.

You have to retain a percentage. It can be any amount up to 50%. So if you retain 50% of Russell's contract it leaves both teams paying $750k (50% of $1.5M) and both teams taking a $2M (50% of $4M) charge against their cap.

PS. You're right about the bonus, its already been paid so it doesn't factor in to any future move.
