Description
Vancouver is going to be up against the Cap regardless of what they do... With three UFA’s to sign IMO the only one worth considering is Markstrom

If Vancouver believes in Demko then I would be fine letting Markstrom walk however I don’t think that is the case. Markstrom is 30 which is a bit scary to sign on a multi year deal but he seems to be getting better with age.

Toffoli has been a great fit in Vancouver and hopefully helps them beat the Wild in the play in round but the relationship needs to end there. Signing him would cost Vancouver a 4th round pick, RW is Vancouver’s deepest prospect position ( Podkolzin, Lind, Lockwood) and at 28 his point totals have been trending in the wrong direction not to mention his skating has always been a weakness. He has looked great in his 10 games in Vancouver on the top line but if they give him a multi year contract imo a couple years in that will become an anchor contract just like they have some currently. Not to mention it blocks Podkolzin and Virtanen from the top 6

Tanev is old and injury prone. Sure he has been a great partner for Hughes but really I think anyone can play well with Quinn. There is definitely cheaper and younger options to replace Tanev.

With that being said in this acgm with Vancouver signing Markstrom they must move Demko. He is a valuable asset and would loose him to Seattle if they don’t. Waiting until the deadline is pointless and he should be moved this summer in order to shed one bad contract. Detroit fans will probably want a first but getting Demko and shedding Pickards one way contract can justify giving a second.

Doing this gets Vancouver below the salary cap and bonus payments to Petey and Hughes. The Canucks need to ride out the 20/21 season until more bad contracts come off the books.

Next Summer they will have over 23 million coming off the books with (Pearson, Suter, Edler, Benn, Baertschi, Stecher, Spooner buyout). The majority of that money will go to Petey and Hughes on long term extensions. Hoglander, Podkolzin, Rathbone and Tryamkin replace some of those guys on ELC and Vancouver is getting back to a better place. Once Petey and Hughes are signed long term and they have an understanding where the cap is going in two years maybe they dip there toes into free agency again, but not until the stink of Roussel and Beagles contracts are off the books and Roberto’s recapture penalty and there young guys are signed long term do they start to fill from outside the organization. Impatient ownership and firing Linden for long term rebuilding was a mistake. Letting Benning sign average NHL players to make the playoffs now was incorrect and for the love of god don’t do that again by signing Toffoli, Tanev and having to trade Boeser or draft picks to make cap space because of bad decision on July 1.

Close but not enough. Wings are in a great position to extract most value out of teams desperate to free up cap space. With 2 more years at 6M for Eriksson, you're looking at Demko + 2021 1st

You might want to rethink Pickard. If you haven't looked at how bad Howard's season was I'd take a look. Detroit kept playing him instead of calling up Pickard.

Canucks have a problem, if they keep Eriksson's contract then they are not going to be able to sign Markstrom. If they want Markstrom then they have to rid themselves of Eriksson. And teams with cap space will exact ll they can.

Yes I like Demko, but he nowhere covers, with a 2nd round pick, two years at a cap hit of 6 million, Demko, one year yes but a 2nd does not cover the 2nd year. Plus if you do want Markstrom, Demko would have to be left unprotected in an expansion draft. Cnuks do not hold any cards in this situation.

Demko can bring us a first we still hold the cards there is more than just the wings interested.we are not gonna give good players away thats just simply bad cap management.benning would be fired but thanks for your opinion.
