What Is Skinners Value Currently

Created by: Not_Not_Batman

Description
Building off the AGM Capitalfail67 put together here (https://www.capfriendly.com/users/Capitalfail67). I am not in favor of this trade, just trying to get a conversation going. If (big if) the Sabres were to do this trade they would have to ship out Skinner I would think.

What would your team trade for Skinner? A down year for sure, but Krueger just never figured out how to properly deploy them. If paired with a good play maker he can easily return to 30+ goal form.

We don't know what is happening with the cap and his contract is scary. He'll be tough to move.

Depends. How much are you willing to retain?

Skinner is a tough one to read as far as trade value goes, especially as he has a NMC which would severely limit the trade partners that BUF could find a decent return with. Any team in the league would love to have him on the roster, but that contract is pretty gross IMO.

So to summarize, I honestly don't know what his trade value is.

All the value is in staying in buffalo, the rest of the league is looking at him as a 5/6 million dollar player over the 9 million price tag. Can’t sell low on that investment, got to hope he gets chemistry with 1c or 2c, and become lethal on the pp.

I would imagine his value is very low. The contract was bad the moment it was signed, and I say that as a fan of Skinner. $9m for a career 30 goal 55ish point guy? Until he's 34/35? Can't see a scenario where you'll get much for that.

Think they'd do best just to hold on to him and try to make the best out of that deal.

2020-21: $81.5M
2021-22: $81.5M
2022-23: $82.5M

Anybody's guess after that. And Skinner has 7 more years at $9M. Ain't nobody taking that on without a big contract coming back.

Agreed, just seeing if a team with some cap would be willing to take the risk in this scenario.

Any team with cap space can sign Taylor Hall for similar money and get a better player without it costing them any assets. I'd say Skinner's value is less than zero at this point, I.e. you'll have to pay someone to take him, either through retention or by taking an overpaid player back. Or both.

Instead of inquiring about skinner you want James Neal? Lol he’s coming off a better year has been far more consistently threw out career is cheaper and far less term committed. Reality is skinner is far far far more value able to buffalo than anyone. He’s a good player but buffalo made their bed with that contract i don’t see anyone else willing to lay in it. Retaining isn’t an option with that much term. It could still work out for buffalo but too big of a gamble for anyone else.

Agreed and in reality that is the course the Sabres will likely take. Seems there is no launching point in this scenario presented.

i think at this point, especially with the flat cap, most teams would rather pay more after seeing some improvement. there is to much salary for teams to take a risk and to much term for BUF to retain salary in a trade

His contract has a negative value, he also has a full NMC and wants to play near home. We don't need to look for a deal for Skinner, we just need him to return to his game, and I think he will return. In any case, this would be a deal for the same contract, maybe Bobrovsky.

If Ralph can figure out how to properly utilize him then I don't see a scenario where he doesn't rebound (hopefully).

He needs to be with Eichel. IIRC both he and Eichel put up their best numbers when together.

It's easier to fire Ralph than to move Skinner. But I hope he gets his game back next season.

heres my thoughts:
1) IF you KEEP skinner, your forward group is theoretically deep. You then have 7M to fill the rest of the roster.
2) Skinner has an almost unmoveable contract. 9m for 7 years with money uncertainty in the league, unless he gets injured not many teams are going to take that cap hit.
3) If you look at skinners big years. they are primarily in contract years. Loads of potential basically wasted because he doesnt want to put in the effort.

Right now there are 2 questions the Sabres need to ask themselves and if the first is yes the 2nd don’t matter.
1. Will Skinner bounce back? If yes keep him. If no go to #2
2. How bad do you want to move him and How much are you willing To retain or add To him to Move him?

Imo most teams won’t touch him because of his contract. If BUF were willing to retain around 3-4M I think there are a number of suitors out there that would be willing to give up a 2nd and a B/B+ prospect. Teams like DAL that need some secondary scoring, maybe COL gets interested, maybe even Edmonton.
