Keeping Pitrangelo and letting Gunnarsson go

Created by: dp6154
Team: 2020-21 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 17, 2020
Published: Jul. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Allen and Steen will most likely be traded together if this dump is gonna work. Detroit fits as a goalie needy team who would be interested in a one year holdover/tryout who has good rapport with Armstrong (he loves going back to the well and that Fabbri trade worked well, also shows Stevey Y is willing to experiment with fallen prospects a bit) who has cap space, would definitely want a first, and would agree to buy Steen out
Gunnarsson is a goo player but gets paid too much to sit on the bench, the Devils have cap and a glut of picks, a middle pick for minimal cap hit to improve their D is nothing to them
If Pietro returns (please God), this is likely what it looks like

Not a big fan of the condition on the 1st. It's a big contract to take on in Steen, and I would be shocked if we bought him out, as that keeps him on the cap for longer. If you're willing to defer to 2022 lets just call it an unprotected 2022 1st.

Give up the number 4 goalie in terms of sv%, and 2nd in GAA, plus a first just to be able to buy steens contract out? Why wouldnt the blues just buy out Steen then? That and Gunnerson is a solid defensemen for his price tag so it makes no sense giving him up.

Detroit needs a goalie and Steen only costs 3.5M in real money....that should be good enough for a trade....I mean, its better for the Jets if STL doesn't have a 1st roudner...lol...but I think taking it out is a fair trade

Allen isn't really as good as those numbers though. Hes an average goalie. Its just like that carter hutton season a few years ago. I think their is definitely a deal to be made with st Louis and allen makes alot of sense being part of it.

Wouldn’t sign Petro for that deal. I’d also rather trade Bozak for a return and keep Steen and the first.

Detroit can find a backup on the free agent market for like 800k. Why would they want to pay 4M+ for Allen plus take on Steen for a top 16 protected 1st that will very likely be in the 25-32 range

Allan would be a starter imo on Detroit...

Bernier was fantastic last season, he was one of the best goalies in the league in the 2nd half while playing behind the worst D in the league. At best Allen would be 1A/1B tandem. Regardless it isn't worth it to Detroit. It makes no difference for them who their 1B/backup goalie is, they aren't competing next year so why pay 4M?

It’s too tight against the cap. There has to be more breathing room

Bernier has never solidified himself as a starter in the NHL. 2 seasons with Toronto and this year with Detroit and his numbers are subpar at best. Allen is younger, has better stats and has beaten out Elliot, Halak, and Bishop for starting positions.

Allen has been that good for one year as a backup, how valuable do you think, say, Laurent Brossoit was last offseason after having a similar year? Also buying Steen out doesn't free enough cap for the Blues to resign Pietrangelo, the point of the trade is to free 5.75M instead of 2.2M or the Blues would just buy him out themselves

I don't even know what to say to this. I know this site is often either people proposing trades that are like Autson Matthews for a 4th 50% salary retained or "lol, you want Martin Jones and you're only giving up 2 1sts and Colton Parayko" so whether it's the poster or the commenter that is punchdrunk on homerism the response is always "not enough" but I took a lot of feedback from multiple posts including from Detroit fans and while I thought this trade is more fair if it's Steen, Allen, a 2nd and a 3rd for a 4th and a prospect, people were like "you need to put a first in there".
The consensus is that Allen has value (not tons but some value) and brings back between a 3rd and a 4th, probably a 4th. Steen + a 2nd & 3rd if a team is gonna play him or Steen + a 1st if a team is gonna buy him out bring back between a 4th and a 6th or an equivalent prospect. I mashed them together and between specifically trying to set my homerism aside, trying to factor in that Yzerman is a good GM and factoring in the Blues leverage I took an intentionally sub-optimal trade that fits the Blues and went "this makes sense"

If you wanna tell me what "another piece" is and why Steen + 1st and Allen bringing back less than what they are consensus assumed to being back in separate trades is "not enough" then maybe that's helpful but just "not enough" is not remotely useful feedback, i'm sorry to go off but it's just not helpful or sensible in any way & I don't understand why you took the time to type it out let alone hit "submit". Please, I like feedback, it helped me arrive at this particular proposed roster, but it has to be helpful feedback
