Examples Of Players The Blue Jackets Neither Want Nor Need

Created by: Viqsi
Team: 2019-20 Custom Team
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 17, 2020
Published: Jul. 17, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is not exhaustive - there's obviously many others - but these are the ones that show up with some high frequency. Particularly in proposals involving Josh Anderson, although one or two show up in Savard and/or "for picks" proposals as well.

The astute observer will note that there are three common trends going on here:

#1: "I heard you need offense, so here's a depth scoring winger."
(We've got a ton of those already. Indeed, that's pretty much 90% of our offense as is. Stuffing in more does not improve the team - they're not going to get the minutes they need; those minutes just aren't available. So it's not worth it to us.)

#2: "I heard you needed centers, so here's a depth/project center."
(We have plenty of depth centers; what we actually need is a #2C - and we already have four "project" guys, so spending otherwise valuable assets to acquire another is not going to help as there's not enough room for them all as is.)

#3: Any Left Defense Whatsoever
(Learn to read a depth chart and go away.)

EDIT 2020-07-18: Added Derek Ryan to the list, because apparently you have to explicitly enumerate these things when dealing with Flames fans.

Kerfoot

I kept him off the list because I didn't want to pick on the Leafs too much.

There's certainly a lot of Jackets fans who are desperately hoping he will be. I tend more towards "buy him out if we need the cap space, otherwise, meh, whatever". What Kekalainen does with him is anyone's guess.

I know you just said you don't want Kerfoot but if the Leafs offered Kerfoot for Wennberg at 50% retained would the Jackets take it?

No, not with retention. We can buy out Wennberg at a 1/3 rate such that the cap hit is at about $500K, so we're not about to retain anywhere near that much.

I wouldn’t be 100% opposed to a Jost trade, it just depends on the price.

I feel the same way about Kapanen - but the "price" it depends on is going to look like basically trying to poach the guy at a severe discount, so for practical purposes it's pretty much a "no" IMO.

As far as Wennberg, I get the sense he may be getting bought out. His cap hit would be very small and would free up 4 mil in cap space. Not sure the Jackets would use that space but I sense also the Dubois contract may get a little tough to fit under the cap currently. Buying out Wennberg would free up enough cap space to scare off any OS. There will be a lot of movement during the off-season. Being so condensed will have teams making moves that otherwise wouldn’t happen.

I think there is enough cap leaving teams that this won't be true.
Yes there will be a handful of teams like TB who have issues. But for the most part, I don't think the rest of the league is in that bad of shape.
I helps that they have an excuse to keep contracts down as well. Guys who would have earned 3.5 are gonna get 3. Guys who would have made 3, are gonna get 2.5.
Expect a lot of contracts going till the tv contract.

Another reason I also think Wennberg is going to be bought out is because of younger talent. Right now he occupies a spot on the roster that could be used for another player. Foudy is likely going to be in the team next season and would need a roster spot. Plus, Jarmo likes Stenlund and in his time up with this team has been very productive in limited minutes. Wennberg would just be holding others back. Not sure the Jackets can afford to stun the growth of the youngsters.

eh

1 PLD,
2 Atkinson
3 Tex
4 Foudy
5 Nick
6 Bjork
7 Jenner
8 Gustav
9 Bemström
10 Robinson
11 Grigorenko

I mean maybe they keep around.
12 Anderson

then you got

shorzy
Nash
Stenlund
and Wennburg

So you get 1- 2 out that group.
Shorzy and Nash ain't really anything to write home about.

Roster space wise it depends on what they do in both the offseason and with Anderson.

But it's not like they don't have space. They do.

I would be very curious to see what happens on the outside chance the Jackets lose the play-in and win the draft lottery.
They could pass on Lafrieniere and go with a center, like Byfield or Perfetti.
But then again, the rule is you take the best available, which is Lafrieniere.
I bet Wennberg's numbers improve considerably on a line between Lafrieniere and Atkinson.
(Top line being Nyquist, Dubois & Bjorkstrand...who showed a ton of Chemistry before Bjorkstrand's injury).
