Could They Trade For Weegar

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 18, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the Leafs are going to make a move for a defenceman this offseason, I have to think MacKenzie Weegar is their primary target. The guy had an amazing year and was amongst the top of the league in zone exits and scoring chance prevention. He can play big minutes and has a pretty high QOC. His market value is around 6 million, but he will probably get less in real life.

No second round picks for 3 years in a row. I don’t see oilers being into that.

Can’t see leafs trading a first for weegar. Maybe Kerfoot + Dermott + pick for Wallmark + Weegar

The Florida trade might be a bit of an overpay tbh. I'm not a huge fan of trading first rounders, but this team could do some damage

What you've given up here puts the Goodrow deal to shame.

Weegar is similar to Holl. Would you give that much up for Holl and pay him 4.5M?

If you're gonna give up tha contract you may as well just sign DeMelo and actually get assets for Dermott and Johnsson and keep the 1st.

Also I dont see the point of the Cousins trade. Our 4th liners should be all under 1M dollars with our salary structure.

Just sign DeMelo and keep all your assets?

That's exactly what I did in my last post. I signed DeMelo and kept Dermott and the 2021 first

I cant see Florida wanting to part with Weegar. They are a team that needs to drop salary(rumored to be around 10 mil before the pause) and Weegar is a good RHD who will get paid less than hes worth. Theres no incentive there for the Panthers.

Makes a lot more sense if that's the ask. There are actually several RHD options on the UFA market this year if we clear out some cap space.

I traded Johnsson for a couple picks, and maybe I should've added Engvall as a cap dump

I'm pretty sure 4.5M is not less than he's worth.

Johnsson basically has to go. Engvall can move if they get a fair offer but they have the option to keep him as well.

Although I agree, I think our need for a really solid bottom 6 and a 3C outweighs our need for seconds. They’d (hopefully) be low anyway so it probably wouldn’t be hard to get 1 or two if holland decides to flip AA or Larsson or something like that

His market value was called 6 million in the AGM. Seems like a pretty good deal the Panthers have there. Why would they be wanting to move that when they need to save money and still field a hockey team?

And? Johnsson and Kerfoot are not options the Cats would want. They would ask for Kapanen and a younger Defenseman IE Dermott or Liljegren

I'm pretty sure 4.5M is not less than he's worth.

Dermott's market value is also 6M. What's the point you're trying to make?

Like I said in my original post, that a team whos trying to save a rumored $10 mil in payroll doesn't have a reason to move a player providing more value than his contract pays out. Try to keep up.

The get a bunch of ELC contracts back...

Anyway I'm glad if Florida doesn't want to do this. This would be horrid asset management by the Leafs.

I use to like the idea of kerfoot for 3c but leaf fans actually talked me out of it. Would we be any worse off with signing gagner for league min instead? Would kerfoot play on either special teams? Doubtful highly doubtful. With mcdavid nuge and leon in top six it’s going to take a significant disaster if ever looking at kerfoot to fill any holes higher in line up. Also I’m considering Leon and mcdavid are best players on the team if either of them feel like double shifting hard to say no and that’s coming straight out of 3c ice time. I’m just not sure kerfoot is worth giving up any asset for as a 3c he would actually have a fairly limited role. I’m ok spending an asset to acquire a 3c but I’d rather a rental over term for that spot (I’m rather high on Mcloed) also someone that is more successful on winning draws to help protect late game leads.

None of those players are on an ELC contract other than the 1st round pick.

Just another silly obsession with another teams RHD, Down grade at centre, weaken depth at defence and to give a a first.
Keep Kerfoot and Dermot (and the pick) and the Leafs will be much better off than signing Weegar to 4.5m
