Initial Creation Date: Jul. 20, 2020
Published: Jul. 20, 2020

Description
The Murray trade is really a guess. Open to tweaks on it.
The other signings are bridge deals as I imagine we'll see a lot of one year deals going around for modest raises.

Trades
1.
PIT
  1. 2020 2nd round pick (DET)
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Hard to gauge what Murray's return will be since this season has been a rough one, but he's still a legit #1 goalie.
DET
  1. Murray, Matt [RFA Rights]
2.
PIT
  1. 2020 4th round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
$1.625 for JJ is better pill to swallow as OTT needs to fill out their roster and can easily be buried in the minors if necessary.

Bjorkvist is a former 2nd round pick who's had some injury setbacks, but projected to be a solid bottom-six player.
OTT
  1. Björkqvist, Kasper
  2. Johnson, Jack ($1,625,000 retained)
3.
PIT
  1. Demers, Jason
Additional Details:
Both players are pending UFAs after that season. AZ needs to fill out some middle-six spots and a healthy Bjugstad would be a nice plug. Demers for one season adds some 3rd pair depth.

I'd rather get guys in cap dump trades, Demko, Allen. Or sign someone like Gress. We're not going to contend for a couple of years, so what we need now is a stopgap anyway. There'll be someone available in 2-3 years.

If I'm the Red Wings, I wouldn't trade for Murray. I'd rather sign a stopgap goalie in free agency that can play with Bernier. We won't really need a goalie for a couple years so we might as well wait in case one of our goalie prospects turns into something.

No way DET pays the 32OA pick for a goalie PIT is going to have to give away. The league know PIT is in trouble, and is going to have to pay Jarry (especially since he may start the playoffs this year), so no one is going to bail them out with value (32OA isn't close to value on a guy that can't stay on the ice).

Yeah, he did. Murray had a rough year, but I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt based on past success.

You're probably better off trading Murray to a contender. A contender in need of a goalie will be more desperate and could take a chance on Murray. The Avalanche are one team that comes to mind but there are probably others.

Detroit declines, Our #32 pick is already like a late 1st round pick will be next season. Murray after the season he had isn't worth that much. Sounds like Detroit is heavily linked either to Markstrom or Demko depending if Vancouver can afford to resign Markstrom or not.

That's all irrelevant. What's relevant is what the market has to offer. Most of the decent goalies who will likely hit the market are much older and the ones that are in their late 20's will be grabbed up immediately.

Again, I'm open to suggestions to make the trade more realistic. Two second roudners too much? Ok, I think at least one 2nd is fair with something else. Maybe a decent prospect?

Bernier also had a better year than John Gibson. So that comparison logic is horrible

Murray will never be a Carey Price or Connor Hellebuyck, but he doesn't have to be nor does a team NEED a goalie like that. I think people get lost in that thought process. Murray had a rough patch this year that really killed his numbers and is not indicative of how good he is. Murray is a legit #1 goalie capable winning you a playoff series, not to mention a stanley cup which he helped do not once, but twice.

The last thing OTT is concerned about is JJ's cap hit. If they're taking on a LHD that they DO NOT NEED they'd prefer to get something real in return. I mean be honest, PIT could get a 4th round pick for BJÖRKQVIST right now, so why is OTT giving one up AND taking on JJ's contract. Horrible deal for the SENS.

It's far from a horrible deal. Let's look at the facts...

1) Ottawa isn't going to be a playoff team for probably another two to three seasons. (JJ's contract is three more years)
2) Ottawa WILL be taking on some cap dumps to keep stockpiling futures.
3) Ottawa has to fill out the rest of their defense and there aren't going to waste their time with any big names yet.
4) PENS ARE RETAINING 50%, so $1.625 is an easy hit for them to take on and they can always bury him in the minors for more savings if they deem so.
5) Bjorkvist is going to a good young cheap bottom six player which is always a good thing to have.

I mean, could the Pens add a little more? Sure, maybe throw in a 3rd on top of it and that's fine, but this is FAR from a horrible deal. Plus, it leaves them more space to take on more bad contracts for better futures.

Johnson (50% ret) and Bjorkqvist for a 4th

This trade is still as bad for the Pens as it was when you suggested it last week. You actually took away the 5th coming back amazingly making it even worse for the Pens.

Well, if we are going to go solely based on how stats went this past year... Shouldn't Detroit be in the AHL? Probably Ottawa too?

Ottawa already has Chabot locked in as 1LD so that leaves Boro, Wolanin, Branstromm and Reilly as guys to play LD for bottom 2 pairs, JJ just adds and is un needed especially if the returns is some no name prospect. Also cpa hit is not an issue for Ott would rather take more cap and get bigger return

Sorry there are quite a few teams that desperately need to create cap space this off season, and OTT is one of the few teams able to take on big contracts. Many of the players these cap trouble teams want to ship out have ONE YEAR remaining on their deal, so OTT could take the cap hit, get a pick or prospect out of it, and move that player at the deadline to a contender. Get a pick from taking the player on before the season starts, get a pick for trading the player away at the deadline. WIN WIN.
Knowing that, there's no reason for OTT to take this deal. NONE.

this is awful.

1st the penguins aren't going to retain on JJ.
They can buy him out for less than that.

They don't need to take cap back on moving Bjugstad and they won't.

and they aren't trading Murray for 2 2nd round picks.

Teams know pit must trade one goalie asap post playoffs...& Murray has decent high cap hit .so wings will not give up good assets (high picks) for him.. Murray is basically a cap dump for pit..meaning pens need to add sweetener to take his contract ..or take a contract back in return
