2020 with a fix

Created by: gregb569
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 21, 2020
Published: Jul. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Cap is definitely extremely tight, but we could also not resign Schultz/Sheary to save some $ and promote internally or go after cheaper options. Sheary is really not needed, but would provide us amazing depth with Simon/Lafferty as 13/14th forwards.

  1. Kahun, Dominik [RFA Rights]
BUF

Additional Details:
- Jarry and Blackwood form a great cheap, young 1-2 punch.
- Riikola can play either side, anywhere from 5-7D.
- Bjugstad will provide some top6/top9 depth, be flipped at TDL.

It's not a bad trade for the Devils per say but Blackwood is a RFA and won't be cheap next year. Also with so many holes on the right side on wing and D I'd rather they shore that up but I don't mind this deal to make goalie a position of strength. I'd only do this if Cory retires.

I don't see NJD being interested because one of those two goalies would most likely be taken in the expansion draft by Seattle. So giving up a 2nd for a 1 year goalie when they probably won't be a playoff team next year anyway isn't the best use of that 2nd round pick.

That is a good call. I haven't thought of that.

I think you look at Elvis' contract with CBJ as a baseline for Blackwood + Jarry. Elvis outplayed both (marginally better than Jarry) and only got 4M/2yr. So IMO, Jarry should be ballpark 3.75M, and Blackwood anywhere from 3-3.5M. Yes, that'd be paying a lot for 3 goalies (13.25M combined), but you have 2 very capable, young goalies who can run a tandem for years to come as neither are considered elite starting goalies.

Riikola isn't a household name, but he played very well for us.. coaching for whatever reason doesn't seem to like his game.. he could definitely play 3RD line RD adequately.

Murray will be on the move, not Jarry (unless someone grossly overpays)

I would like to see Riikola get a shot somewhere else, for him.

Blackwood: 2.77 GAA 0.915 save %
Elvis: 2.30 GAA 0.923 save %

I would say he did...

Ever heard of advanced stats? GAA and Save-% are basically useless in comparing 2 goalies.

If the stat doesn't take the quality of the chance/shot into consideration like GAA you can't say for sure who's better. And we haven't even talked about the quality of the team in front of the goalie or the amount of games they played.
