How would you rate this offseason out of 10 No Leafs opinion allowed

Created by: GMs
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 22, 2020
Published: Jul. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Draft day : Bergevin wants to draft Askarov / Timmins really likes Sanderson. So sorry for the ones who want a forward, MTL draft Askarov or Sanderson ( Lafreniere Byfield Stutzle Drysdale Perfetti Rossi Raymond Holtz are gone in the top 8 ( no order ) ). MTL could draft up by trading mid round pick to get William Villeneuve RHD.

UFA : Kinkaid Weise Folin don’t receive contract, they leave.

RFA : Hudon Ouellet McNiven Lucchini Luchuk Sturtz Waked aren’t getting qualified ( Hudon might take another 1 year deal ).

Domi : Bridge, one year deal to prove he’s a good fit on the wing. He agrees to play LW for the 2020-2021 season

Mete : He proved us he is a good but not great dman. Right now he’s a solid #5, so he takes a bridge deal so we can see if he’s step up or not.

Evans gets 2 years, probably a lock for next year but nothing is sure.

Juulsen gets a contract of course, need to bounce back and forget that bad injuries

Vejdemo Laval, can be a call up option with Ryan Poehling

Blandisi shows good things, good vet for Laval

FA : Bergevin decide to not offer a contract to Kovy or Thompson, he chooses to move on. Sign Sheahan ( could be more than 1M ) to sit in the press box, LW/C option if we have injuries

Aaron Dell gets 2 years so less AAV, Primeau and him will fight for the backup spot in 2021-2022.

Marc always do one trade at least during the offseason, I guess it will be a minor trade so I went with bringing Chiasson back home to fight for the last roster place 4RW. Claude Julien will decide who’s playing and who’s sitting in the press box.

We might have another offersheet to Barzal, but Isles probably match right away, same for Dubois in Columbus.

Laval Roster :

Dauphin (Vet) - Poehling - Ylönen (fresh rookie)
Vejdemo - Hillis (fresh rookie) - Belzile (Vet)
Teasdale (fresh rookie) - Blandisi (Vet) - Alain
Veilleux (Vet) - Hawel (fresh rookie) - Khizamutdinov ( fresh rookie)

Leskinen - Fleury
Olofsson (Vet) - Brook
Alzner (Vet) - UFA young CHL player not draft RHD

Primeau
Lindgren / Demchenko
Fight for the backup spot, the one who lose is assigned to the ECHL

Pezzetta Verbeek —> ECHL

Personally, I’d like to bring back Uncle Nate

I wouldn’t mind taking a chance and sign Domi 6-7 years 6.5M or 5 years 5.85M

Greiss would be my first option for the backup or Khudobin but they’ll want more money and terms, if they can agree to a 1 year deal 4M AAV, go for it. I don’t want to here on person complain about too much money on goalies.

I would rate a 8/10

Sorry to break this "no leafs opinion allowed" bull****, but this is pretty realistic. 8/10 for me on this one. Doubt Montreal drafts Askarov, but if Sanderson is there, he would be pretty expected pick.

realistic but 5/10. this team is not good enough for playoffs and not bad enough to really improve through the draft.

6/10. Trading for Chiasson and signing Dell and Sheahan are moves that a contender would make. Because Montreal is rebuilding, we would be much better off keeping Lindgren or Demchenko as our backup playing Vejdemo instead of Sheahan and Poehling instead of Chiasson. This team is trying to go in two different directions but otherwise I like a quiet offseason.

Is this the rumour on the draft selection (Askarov/Sanderson)? Or just a guess? I doubt Sanderson is available, and if Montreal drafts Askarov above Quinn or Lundell, I would be pretty upset.

Sounds like Kovy coming back is almost guaranteed.

3/10, We didn't improve, and we didn't prepare for a summer where Gallagher, Tatar, Danault, Armia, Petry are all UFA and Kotkaniemi, Lehkonen are RFA. Only added to it with Domi, Mete as RFA again.

I think it's pretty realisitic.

I don't know how I feel about a 1 year deal for Domi. He already took a 2 year "prove it" deal, and put up 116 points, including a 72 point year. I get that this year was back down a bit, but I think we can mostly agree that he's likely a 60 pt guy.

Edit: I also wouldn't draft Askarov with Primeau waiting in the wings, and Price signed for a long time.

I think Ken Holland's top priority will be trading Kris Russell, followed by trading James Neal. If he can do either, or both, Alex Chiasson will remain an Oiler, as will Riley Sheahan.

Last season Edmonton had an incredible power play and among players with 90 minutes or more of power play time, six Oilers were in the top eight with respect to GF/60. Alex Chiasson was number one in the league with respect to this category. While his 5v5 stats clearly suggest he is a depth player when playing even strength, he is also an outstanding net-front presence on the power play. I'm pretty sure that Holland will ask for Montreal's 2021 3rd round pick, and after negotiating with Bergevin he might agree to their 4th round pick instead.

Sheahan made huge contributions to the NHL's 2nd ranked penalty kill, and he was beginning to offer some secondary offense toward the end of the last season. His future in Edmonton will be dependent on his salary expectations, whether Edmonton can clear a bit of extra cap space, and the performance of Jujhar Khaira during the play-in series and playoffs. It is likely he will cost a bit more than $1,000,000 because the Oilers can probably afford that amount, and they offer him an opportunity to play a meaningful role rather than sit in the press box.

ALL THAT LONG SPEECH TO END UP WITH THE EXACT SAME CRAPPY ROSTER AS THIS SEASON. IF THATS BERGEVINS OFFSEASON PLAN, HE WON'T BE HERE FOR MUCH LONGER. FIRED BY CHRISTMAS...

I didn’t read all of it. 19/20 Oilers fans would trade Chiasson for a 5th so I’ll keep the trade

That’s not my opinion, just rumors saying Bergevin really likes Askarov and Timmins likes Sanderson.

Oh boy, 60 yo Nordique fan here ? We had Kotkaniemi Drouin Byron Armia Gallagher Tatar Mete injured this year. Drouin Byron missed almost the entire season. When Drouin and Byron went down we had 2 losing streak of 8 games. We need to stay healthy with this roster, like in 2018-2019

Sure, I think the vast majority would if a trade was necessary in order to clear cap space. If the cap crunch can be solved with other moves then I think Chiasson brings decent value with his expiring contract and fans wold be fine with him playing out that contract in Edmonton, or seeing him moved at the TDL.
