2020 isles v2

Created by: tm0000
Team: 2020-21 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 21, 2020
Published: Jul. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Barzal gets a three year bridge deal similar to what Brayden Point got last year.

Pulock and Toews get fair-ish long term deals. I used Faulk & Gardiner as comps - gave Pulock and Towes a bit less since Faulk/Gardiner were UFA contracts and Lou in the past has driven a hard bargain with RFAs.

Kovalchuk is a one-year stopgap until Wahlstrom is ready.

Nate Thompson is a cheap replacement for Ciziaks who can (hopefully) be replaced by Koivula at some point during the season.

On the third pair defense, Aho splits time with Boychuck (until Boychuk's inevitable injury); Dobson plays pretty much every night alternating between LD and RD depending on his his partner.

Ideally, Ladd is stashed on LTIR, but if he's too healthy to be banished to Robidas Island, he can go to the AHL until the Isles bribe Seattle to take him off their hands.

Trades
1.
NYI
  1. 2021 7th round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Hickey provides relatively cheap (i.e., cheaper than signing a UFA) depth and minimal term to a team that has only three defensemen under contract for next season.
CGY
  1. Hickey, Thomas
  2. 2021 5th round pick (NYI)
2.
NYI
  1. 2022 7th round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
Sens do this to save their cheap ass owner a few bucks - Leo has a $3MM AAV, but is only owed a total of $3.5MM over the next two seasons. Plus he provides "veteran grit" or some shit to a young team.
OTT
  1. Komarov, Leo
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (NYI)
3.
NYI
  1. 2021 3rd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Detroit weaponizes their cap space to pick up a solid middle pair defenseman for a minimal asset.
4.
NYI
  1. 2021 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Hate to see him go, but a $3MM 4C is a luxury the Isles can't afford cap-wise. Cizikas would slot in nicely on the Avs as the 3C behind McKinnon and Kadri with no long term commitment required.

Flames would need a better pick to take on 2.5 x 3 at LD. Way better options in FA.

Colorado don't need a 3C bad enough to do NYI a favour capwise AND pay them a 2nd. We also already have Bellemare for this sort of defensive bottom 6 C role, at a much cheaper cap hit.

I also doubt that Sakic would be interested as he weighs analytics heavily and Cizikas has a career 46.8 CF% and 47.6 FF%.

I like Cizikas, but the Avs aren’t trading for a bottom 6 guy. Also in your own description of him 4th line C isn’t getting you a 2nd rd pick.

OTT declines. IF they're looking to take on a veteran winger there are numerous options with 1 year remaining on their deals, or even snagging a UFA vet on a 1 year deal then move him at the deadline for a pick.
Ennis is a perfect example. 1 year at 800k. Scored 14g and 33 pts in 61 games. Then we moved at the deadline for a 5th round pick. This season I would be looking at Brassard on a one year deal with the promise we move him to a playoff team at the deadline.

COL declines.

Currently don’t have a need for a bottom 6 F.

I think the RFA contracts are fair.

To move Hickey I think you need a 3rd, or include Aho and re-sign Greene as the 7th D-Man.

Leo may be on LTIR moving forward, if he is that solves a lot of problems.

I think Leddy can get 2 3rd round picks.

Casey is a great player, but he is overpaid for a 4th liner. If you traded him he would get a 4th at most. I think this teams needs Casey, get through the 1 year left then try to sign him to $1.5M contract moving forward. If we keep Casey, Thompson is not a need.

Ilya is not an option for the Isles, he would be a horrible fit for Trotz's system and I would think Lou may hold a grudge against him.

DET has no need for Leddy, as they aren't competing for a playoff run anyway. The 3rd round pick is worth way more than Leddy to DET.

Agreed. Leddy has value, just not to Det (or any rebuilding team really). Wings are better off overpaying a short term free agent and not giving up draft capital.
