Why trade a 1st with Steen just buy him out

Created by: BluesBandit
Team: 2020-21 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 23, 2020
Published: Jul. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
No chance the Blues package a 1st with Steen to get rid of him. Best case scenario is he retires but that’s unlikely. I don’t know if Söderberg signs a 1 year deal but maybe he wants a chance to win a cup and he would have as good a chance here as anywhere. Other options for that spot could be Maroon again, Williams, maybe Perry, basically a cheap vet who can help Thomas. Or just bump Blais/Kostin up.

  1. Allen, Jake
  2. 2020 5th round pick (CAR)
2.
STL
  1. Stanley, Logan
Additional Details:
Little retires and Jets use that cap space.
WPG
  1. Bozak, Tyler
  2. Walman, Jake [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Walman is an offensive LHD who’s never really broken through with the Blues. Basically a swap of two prospects at the same position who can’t seem to make it work with their team.
3.
STL
  1. 2020 5th round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Saw a proposal with him going to NYR and Rangers fans seemed to like the idea of Gunns playing on the left side as a D cover for Fox/Trouba/Deangelo until Miller is ready.

Cap hit would be 3.4mil if you bought him out. They need all the cap space they can get to sign Petro

Because his buyout sucks. You would have to trade him.

It works here?

Yes, in the past he’s usually packaged picks with contracts he wants to get rid of, but they’ve always brought back a good player (ROR, Schenn). I just think our prospect pool could stand to get deeper so he won’t trade a first for someone he can fit in the buyout.

It’s horrible, his first year is 3.4M, then his second year is 1.6M!!

It’s not that bad. Definitely not as bad as giving up a 1st round pick.

I'd be shocked if STL is able to get rid of Allen, Bozak and Gunnarsson all without taking any cap back at all.

I know it seems like it will easy but you have to realize there are only a few teams In the NHL that can actually take on more cap in this current NHL climate and quite a few teams that are trying to get rid of cap. Which is flooding the market. Teams with extra cap space will have their pick of the litter.

I don't think trading away 10M+ in cap in an off season is going to be as easy as presented as above and if trading Steen with a 1st (probably late 1st anyway) is the key to keeping the core intact and resigning Piet, than that may not be so bad. All good teams that win cups have to make sacrifices. I don't think using a 1st to get rid of some cap to make it all work is that bad considering. This team is and will be playoff bound for a few years coming. That pick should be safely in the top 25-32.

I get what you’re saying, but that’s why I’m not trying to do it all at once. Also, I tried to make them replace players with similar cap hits/positions that are presumed to leave (Bozak-Little, Allen-Holtby). The most any team would take on at a time would be Winnipeg at 5mil and that’s only for a year.

Did you trade for Little in the WPG deal? Cuz I don't see him anywhere. If so that's a bad deal IMO because he isn't guaranteed to be finished as a player and could come back at any time. Not to mention a NMC and 4 more years on his contract.

BTW Im not advocating that STL has to let Pietrangelo go, trade players with 1sts, etc. Just that the idea that STL trading away 10M+ in cap, even if its on 1 year of contracts left is asking a lot. They'll most definitely need to retain some cap on players/ take back cap in the trade, in addition to buying out Steen and then maybe cutting some additional cap on a very serviceable player like Sundqvist for example.

Worst comes to worst if they need the extra cap, they trade Steen with a 1st 2020 since they're more than likely to go far this playoff. I'd say Soderberg at 2M is out of the question. Time for existing players on the team to get bigger roles, like Blais for example. Replace that 4th line hole with 800K player like MacEachern or whomever.

Its totally still very doable without gutting the team IMO.
