Description
Playing around with some line combinations if the Sabres decide not to make a splash in the UFA or Trade market. Trying to pair players with people they had chemistry with last year/ have a complimentary play style.

I think the UFA market for a 2C is kinda thin so I am going with Reinhart at 2C. I know there has been plenty of opportunities for him to go down and play that position and they have not put him there, so why would they do that now. But I think if this season is as crazy as it seems with Covid and Expansion draft on the horizon it might be tough to move and accquire players at a reasonable cap hit.

I know the first reaction this roster wont be a good one. But I think there is a ton of potential here. I am a firm believer that this is a fringe playoff team, and with the addittion of a bonfde 2c would be a solid playoff team.

As for the line construction the first line Skinner and Eichel obviously have great chemistry and having a player of Eichels caliber I think makes up for Tage being a weak RW1. However I think is skill set is perfect for this line. Tage is a big body that will battle down low and help open space for Skinner to score his dirty goals. He also has a rocket of a shot and having Eichel dish him some clappers I think would work well. This would be a cheap option to finish out a top line while spreading out the talent.

2nd line is a complete mystery lol. This would be the line that determines the success, and I know people have not had great opinions of Mittelstadt but he is a solid play maker that got out bodied and lost in his first stint. I think he gained some confidence in the AHL and hoping he puts up a little more size during his year long offseason. Reinhart has the tangibles to be a solid C in the league he has great vision and is excellent with break out passess. I think Cozens will be the guy that recieves a lot of reinharts passess to exit the zone with speed. I think overall the line composition is okay its just very unknown having basically 2 rookies and an inexperienced center.

the 3rd line looked awesome at the end of the year. I dont know enough about Kahun style but these 3 looked excellent.

4th line is kinda meh Okposo will bring good leadership Lazar was an awesome addition perfect 4th line, hardworking responsible and great with faceoffs. Asplund will hopefully help this line put up some offensive numbers. I know LOG was great but Larsson isnt coming back and Girgs will make some team very happy, the dude just could not finish.

Obviously they will have to make some kind of move so this is largely useless but if they dont make a big splash I could see something like this working.

Except its buffalo so they will definitely suck but it was wort a try

6 points out when Ullmark got hurt.
Dahlin was injured for 9 games
Olofsson injured for 14 games
Skinner was injured for 11 games
Johansen was injured for 9 games
And Ullmark missed time from January 28th to March 9th which was the biggest lost in my opinion.

how bad does this team do?

I think lines 1 & 3 are solid.

2 is a huge ?? but I love Mitts and Cozens and think it could work

it’s still not a playoff team in my opinion

putting reinhart at 2C is a complete shot in the dark

i feel like tage will lag behind on the first line because he’s not ready to keep up with eichel yet...the kid hasn’t played a hockey game since january...throwing him on a line with the big dog might not be the best idea...roch is the place for him (and mittelstadt) next year

the risto-mccabe pairing still freaks me out...theyre just so unreliable

goaltending is still shaky...hutton with the eye problem will be a huge downfall

This is what I'm saying I think the Sabres are a better constructed team than giving credit for, I think their history of losing leaves them vulnerable when things go awry. They do not have the leadership in player personel or coaching to right the ship. that is one of their biggest issues

They do need to add, Mittlestadt and Thompson need to earn a spot in the lineup in my opinion.

Olofsson, Eichel, Cozens
Skinner, Mittlestadt, Reinhart
Kahun, Johansson, Thompson
Asplund, Lazar, Okposo

Would be my preferred lines, it would be interesting to see Eichel with Cozens because it think Cozens could do pretty good job keeping up with Eichel speed wise

Yup the Sabres had a lot of bad luck last year.
If Hutton does not go blind and have a 0-8-4 stretch, they are on the heels of the Leafs for the 8th best in the east.
I think if their luck changes, and the young players (Mittelstadt, Thompson and Cousins) can perform, this team is in the hunt.
Let me add, Dahlin, Eichel, Ristolainen all improved dramatically last year, another jump ahead and maybe all three are all stars.

Two points that go against conventional wisdom on this site:
First, Krueger was not a good coach:
Sobotka on the second line?
Four players have career bad years, Vesey, Rodrigues, Skinner and Sheary.
PK and PP were terrible.
NHL players need a coach not a cheer leader. No one ever accused Bowman of being a cheerleader.
I am afraid we lost Pilut and Vesey will never think of returning because they were mishandled.

Second:
Few people on this site will agree with your line up EVER having a chance of making the playoffs.
That was Botterill's vision and we all know Botterill is a bad GM.
After all he traded away O'Reilly! I guess I am the only one who listened to O'Reilly's entire post season interview.
Botterill made several mistakes:
He should not have fired Housley.
The Scandella trade was terrible. The Frolik trade was worse.
While Johansson was a good addition, we also needed a Center (Reinhart?!) and RW (Rodrigues, Sheary, Thompson?)
While I liked his under the radar free agents (Lazar, Dea, Gilmour and Hammond) a mid 6 center or RW would have been good.
Who blinked last year, Botterill or Brisebois? JT Miller would have looked really nice on this team.
(An aside that is where luck has a lot to do with success. Brisebois wanted Ristolainen and would have paid for him, over the summer he got Shattenkirk for FREE)
He should have paid O'Reilly's bonus (oops, were his hands tied?)

As for the line up.
I think Olofsson needs Jack to get goals.
I think we should have had Sam at center last year instead of Johansson.
Casey and Tage are not busts.
I loved Girgensons and Larsson, but they have priced themselves out of the team.
Adding Miller and Jokiharju while having Montour for an entire season made this a good defense, not the coaching.
You are correct, this team is close, maybe a LHD, and 2nd line forward could be added.
I wonder if Larsson could jump up to #2 Center with Skinner. Did that work well last year?

That is my rant, I am sorry I high-jacked your post for my ravings.
