Kapanen for Severson

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 21, 2020
Published: Jul. 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think that this trade is a natural, given New Jersey's lack of depth on RW (unless the Devils want to switch Gusev over to that side, in which case it creates a weakness on LW).

I added the fourth to the draft picks switch because I thought the original offer was insufficient for New Jersey. There are some loose players (like Michael Amadio or Paul LaDue) floating around the Kings roster that could replace the fourth.

Imo TOR adds on a Kappy-Severson swap.

In general TOP4 D-men are just more valuable than mid-6 wingers.

I think that he's a top-6 RW, particularly on this team. Plus, he's on a very good contract for the Devils.

leafs add in the severson deal

the gudas contract is way to much for way to long

hard to justify the la trade because you don't know where vancovers pick will be

He might be a TOP6 RW in Devils, but that tells more about NJ being a bad team, not necessarily Kappy being that good of a player.

I think that the only way teams like NJ or Anaheim start getting to be good teams is add players like Kapanen. Because he is under team control for several more years, I don't think that Toronto has to add anything. But your position is certainly justifiable, and no less valid than mine!

No, they don't. New Jersey saves $1.8 million in the first year and a whopping $2.7 million in the second year, and has more years of team control on Kapanen than Severson.

Maybe too much, but not too long. Currently, New Jersey has only seventh-round-pick David Quenneville in the RD pipeline, and Subban's contract expires in two years (thankfully).

The assumption is that they don't win more than their play-in matchup and maybe one more round. As an LA fan, I'm fine with it.

I don't see the Kings doing this trade. They already have too many picks in the later rounds this year and next. They need quality over quantity.

But Severson is not a very good defender who is overpayed.

I would not like that deal from a Maple Leafs point of view

I would suggest that both trades are very bad for New Jersey.

Kapanen is a decent middle 6 winger, not worth severson and mid round picks don't make up for it.

why would you trade a first round pick for a late 2nd and other mid round picks? not worth it.

While the value is probably in Torontos favour, Severson isn't a guy they should be looking at. Hes not a first pairing guy on a cup contending team, more of a 3-4D and the Leafs have enough of those. No point in trading an impact player for someone who isn't going to move the needle. I say the Leafs shoot for the stars in a blockbuster trade to acquire a #1, trade for Savard or just leave the roster as is. Any other trades are pretty much pointless

And what are they going to give up for a #1 dman, you know it is going to start w/Nylander, is TOR comfortable with that trading arguably their best value contract?

You've got the Kapanen trade backwards, Leafs need to add not the other way around.

Devils don't do that Kings offer either.

especially when the defenceman is giving you similar production despite playing for a far worse team

A 24 RHD signed for 3 more at a good rate is worth more than a middle 6 guy who has potential to be more.
Enough talk!

Who said they're gonna trade for a number 1? All I said is its pointless to move current impact players for more of the same. We all saw what happened with the Barrie trade

“ I say the Leafs shoot for the stars in a blockbuster trade to acquire a #1, trade for Savard or just leave the roster as is. Any other trades are pretty much pointless”. This is the part I was questioning, that’s pretty straightforward what I was asking right?

You misread the trade. It's the Kings that are getting the quality first by trading three lower picks.
