Leafs Next Year

Created by: CapGuy
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 25, 2020

Description
Trading Andersen seems crazy I know, but hear me out. It doesn’t really matter who the Leafs have in net because their defence (forwards and Defence) hang the goalie out to dry. So why not boost the third line, add a decent dman in Bear and remain cap compliant? Campbell is good enough and Leafs will struggle to resign Andersen so its better than losing him for nothing. I don’t know if these trades make sense (I don’t know the value of Domi or Bear given the flat cap)

That trade - and the contract - for Domi: not happening.

both trades are really lopsided towards Toronto. Even better is you have Domi on the 3rd line and Bear on the 3rd pair

It really doesn’t matter where Andersen is traded. It’s the thought of improving the defence by trading a starter they can’t resign. I also forgot the Oiler signed Koskinen to that long term deal.

What do you think is fair value for a 40-50 point guy? He doesn’t crack top 6 on a lot of teams. Nylander is supposedly ‘overpaid’ and was on pace for 35 goals this year so I struggle to see Domi much over 5mln a year with a flat cap. Then again a team life Buffalo might fork out $8mln lol

That trade with EDM doesn’t make sense from EDM perspective.

They’ve already committed to Kosk (and paid him to be their #1), why would they then go to TOR and give them assets for a 1 year rental .. for another #1 goalie and his higher cap hit?

Well to be quite honest I’m not sure who Domi would replace in the top 6. He reminds me of Kadri when he played on the leafs, although I’d prefer to have Kadri on my team. I’ll admit my knowledge of Bear is limited, it was more so me thinking of teams that could look to contend with improved goaltending at a small cap hit. I think we would both agree that if Andersen was on the block it wouldn’t be hard to find a suitor at $5mln compared to what goalies get paid now.

I agree. You’ll see my other comment explaining that I hadn’t thought of Koskinen. Edmonton doesn’t have to be the suitor. It’s more so finding a team that could contend with improved goaltending at a reasonable cap hit. All I’m trying to get it is that on a team like Toronto Campbell can do the same job at a cheaper cap hit. Whereas a defensive team could benefit from Andersen. That’s my thinking

I disagree with your no goaltending comment. I think the difference in utility you get from Andersen vs. Campbell is less than what you could do to improve your team with assets plus $5mln in cap space. And unless you think they can resign Andersen in 2022 I’d prefer not to lose him for nothing.

Bear would instantly be the best RD in Toronto. Its his first full season in Edmonton and he played first pair. The Goalie market is flooded this year and Andersen is essentially a 5M rental, no one will offer you more than what Lehner got at 75% retention for him

That’s fair. We would probably both agree neither Edmonton nor Toronto have a great right side (Larsson, Benning, Holl, Barrie) so I agree. Like I said I don’t know the player well. I somewhat disagree on your Lehner comment. There’s a difference between a playoff rental at the deadline and a full year rental. I’m also thinking the team that trades for Andersen would have intentions to resign him. I acknowledge Edmonton isn’t a great fit. But getting a goalie for 82 games and playoffs is different than a playoff rental. Leafs wouldn’t have traded Kadri to get Barrie as a playoff rental. Although that deal didn’t work out great either. Cheers!

There is also a difference between 75% retention and no retention. IMO that makes up a massive amount of the difference in control over the player

Agreed. Although I’m quite certain Chicago would not retain 75% over a full season. When you don’t have cap issues and you’re not expecting to make playoffs why not retain and get a higher return. They only retained the salary of the remaining games at 75% which isn’t a lot of cash relative to a full season. Also Lehner was acquired as support for Fleury and his potential absence. Acquiring a starter for 82 games changes things.

Goalies don’t carry that much value and domi will cost a bit more.

If Domi costs more I’d just scrap the trade and move those guys for picks and sign a 3rd line Center UFA for a similar price. Shouldn’t need to pay top dollar for 40-50 consistent points

Campbell has never remotely been close to being a starter, he is an ok backup at best. This is a bad plan forward

Except domi put up 72 points last season. He would be great in toronto but his contract will be 5,5-6.5m. Bit rich for the leafs first line.

Lol Domi got 72 points last season. He will cost more than this. And there is no way Freddy fetches that return. Don’t think he even gets Bear, though I do like the idea of getting Bear.

If 5.5m sounds like 9.5m I can’t help you. I’m just being realistic about his contract demands.

Yes I’m reminded of the one season Domi broke out. For some reason the current season doesn’t matter to this chat. So let’s remove Domi from the equation. All I was really looking for is someone to play 3rd line Center defensively that is less expensive than Kerfoot and Johnsson combined. Couldn’t care less if Domi had 72 or 40 points. As for Andersen, I guess Bear is better than I thought. All I was looking for there is a dependable right handed dman with some contract protection.

My point wasn’t 9.5 vs. 5.5 but more so relying on one breakout season as an outlier. His average production across 2 teams is ~50 points not 70+ Which is similar to Skinner (one 40 goal season over his career and he fetches 9.5mln)

I also don’t think people understand what the flat cap means for contracts. Generally you pay a guy assuming his cap % reduces over a 5yr deal. Whatever Domi gets this year as a % of the cap is gonna be the exact same in 3yrs. Maybe I’m a little off on the $ value, but anything over 5.5mln seems heavy. Could be wrong tho!

Oilers pass. As good as Freddie is as night in and night out carried the terrible leafs defense, bear is now an integral part of the oilers. No one can replace his minutes
