Cap Utilisation

Created by: Seider53

Description
The value here is based upon cap dump trades from last season. Namely Marleau, and extrapolating from that, it's massively hypothetical, and in a different cap world these would never happen. But with the cap being as tight as it is Detroit are poised to take advantage. Before you head to the comments to criticise the value, I am assuming that teams like Ottawa (maybe to a lesser extent because of their owner) LA and NJ are making similar moves, taking Eriksson, Johnson etc. and that given the shortage of teams willing to take on dead cap, the value will increase.

Yayyy a detroit post where Leafs arent paying 1st to get Zetterberg! But like.. Johnsson would cost more than mid late 3rd.

It doesn't have to be Edmonton, but I think the deal is pretty solid. He's a good PK Bottom 6 defensive guy that would be a good complimentary piece for a playoff run, Its not the sexy deadline trade that people might want, but honestly, I think it would serve a contender well (and lets be real, a lot more ridiculous deadline moves happen every single year.)

Wouldn't be hugely opposed to it, a lot would depend on how far into the offseason the leafs get before losing some cap. If this is the autumn equivalent of July 1st, absolutely. But if this comes more than 2 weeks into free agency, value has gone down.

We have way too many bottom 6 guys like Khaira Nygard Haas and Archibald.

I get it’s to anywhere but a third is just to much for guys like him that are a surplus

Toronto isn't getting rid of Johnsson for a cap dump. He has value and, when packaged with one or two more pieces, he can get Toronto a good return

I could see oilers deal happen if JJ or another pk player gets hurt or is under preforming. Depending on the situation come deadline.

Detroit wins every trade. I think Ottawa would give better offers and they have even more cap space.

Also I doubt New Jersey gives that much to move up considering Detroit is considering taking Perfetti anyways.

The difference between Raymond and Drysdale is even close to a 1st. Maybe if they were moving into the top 3.

The price would be more like a mid to late 2nd rounder.

Depends how fast the deal gets made imo. Teams that will be trading FOR Johnsson, would be more likely to be on the up, looking towards the playoffs. At that point, why not look toward Free Agency and get the asset for free? A lot depends on what other teams do, which is why its so challenging to speculate now. But I could very much see a 3rd being fair value at about the midpoint of the offseason.

Its hard to establish a precident because moving up in the top 10 hasnt happened recently. Last couple of drafts the cost to move up a similar number of picks in the mid-late 1st is a 2nd round pick. So extrapolating that to presume moving up 3 spots in the top 10 costs a pick around 20 seems fair.
One of Drysdale and Sanderson won't make New Jersey at 7, so if they have a strong preference they should move up, because Anaheim really needs a D too.
I'm picturing Ottawa making similar moves. Remember though, you're having to justify these moves to ownership, this isnt NHL20, if you're taking on a cap dump your owner is having to pay them real money. Millions of dollars. Convince Melnyk to take on Boychuk say, while receiving less of a return than a 1st.

Theres always one at least at the deadline. Barclay Goodrow got a 1st this year!

As much as I love Glendening, it seems as if other teams are willing to give up a lot for him. In other ACGM's from other teams I've seen him go for a 3rd+. Assuming he has a good season, that will be the asking price.

I like the idea of trading down inside the top 10 but I'm not counting on other teams willing to move up.

I'm like the idea of acquiring Johnsson but I'm not sure if Toronto would do it. Maybe if they don't get many other offers and they're desperate to clear cap.

For Svechnikov, I'm not sure if anyone will give up a 3rd for him. I'd like to give him one more chance to make the team this year.

I'd like to trade for Stepan if we're compensated but I think it's too early to give up on Cholowski.

I kind of doubt Vancouver gives up a 2nd to dump Baertschi, he's not making that much.

Islanders trade looks good.

Helm trade also looks good.

I know Cap Friendly isn't necessarily realistic but lots of people seem to be willing to give a 3rd for Glendening.

From what I can see the only team motivated to move up would be Jersey. Theyre prospect pool is excellent at F but lacking on D. Theyre currently behind a team in a similar position, who would select whichever of Sanderson or Drysdale they prefer. If New Jersey moves up they still pick twice in the first half of the early 1st. (Having detroit take the latter of their three 1sts makes it a far better deal for them, as the forward they get with the middle pick will still be damn good, whereas Detroit's pick at 20 is that little bit riskier.)

If you look through past deadline trades this deal is essentially made a couple of times each year. Defence first, bottom 6PK guy for a 3rd.

For Detroit fans that are looking and hoping for 2022 1sts, we should comfortably have upwards of $15million cap space next summer too, so we can take on 1 or 2 bad deals, and/or swing on a UFA (though I think it's too early to look to UFA)
And it'd be pretty easy to take on a cap dump at the deadline if a team needs to make space for a run.
