The Detroit trade is probably the absolute minimum value I would expect for taking on Stepan. It wouldn't be looked on highly, but as he is still capable I could grow to be ok with it in time. As a fan I would expect more, another 2nd, or replacing the '22 2nd with a '21 1st.

Retain and flip at the TDL for another 2nd, it's a good trade for Detroit, you could use a stopgap 2C upgrade.

I'm on the bandwagon of trading for Stepan and potentially keeping him on as a Veteran 2C, however a 2nd is still a lot for a year at 6.5, especially given the seeming desire to resign Hall.

You're getting the 2nd, not giving one up, then retain at the TDL and get another 2nd for Stepan.

Get a 2nd for taking on an okay stopgap 2C upgrade for a season then retain on Stepan and trade him for another 2nd at the TDL, what's not to like here for Detroit?

As I said, it would be fine, I wouldn't be mad, but if im being optimistic I feel that
1. Yzerman gets more on the initial trade from ARI, 2 2nds of 1 1st could be achievable, he's Arizona's only cap dump that doesn't have some kind of NTC/NMC, so you pretty much have to trade him.
2. We can keep Stepan on a 4-5m contract as a stopgap 2C for a couple of years.

As Detroit fan I would be ok with just removing Enh. If needed maybe throw in Turgeon.

Flip him at the TDL doesn't actually work as much as people suggest. Most of the trades that involve flipping there is a deal already in place for the flip. Plus teams aren't spending as much at the TDL and with a flat cap teams won't be spending as much at the 2021 TDL. Why would a team take a deal where they have to trade a play just to get the full value out of the deal.

I do agree that Stepan still has some value but he is 30 with a cap hit of $6.5M and in the last year of his contract and most likely isn't going to sign in Detroit. Basically making him a rental from Detroit's point of view.

I’d consider that trade if I’m Detroit. I’d like to keep Ehn though

Dude Detroit is getting a 2nd for taking Stepan in this scenario and another team would for sure give a 2nd for a retained Stepan at the 2021 TDL, the Jets gave a conditional 3rd/4th for Eakin, the Blues traded a late 2nd for retained Scandella(yes I know he's a D), surely Detroit could get a mid to late 2nd for a retained Stepan, I get the flat cap thing but don't think that's gonna have much if any bearing on what teams do when acquiring UFA's to load up for a playoff/cup run at the 2021 TDL.

Teams spent a lot and there were a lot of moves at the or around the 2020 TDL and with a flat cap UFA's like Stepan might be more valued then guys with term will be.

For the record I meant Stepan as a one season 2C stopgap in hopes Veleno takes a major step over the course of the season, wasn't implying to try and sign him as a slightly longer stopgap 2nd line center.

I like both. Would need 50% retained. Depends on the price.

Take another look at your TDL data. Yes there were a lot of moves but what teams paying for those players is down and with a flat cap its going to go down even more. The flat cap is also going to raise the cost of dumping cap.
