Lafreniere and Jarry Trade

Created by: Melnyk_0ut
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2020
Published: Jul. 26, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Pens fans wouldn't be too disappointed if they lost to MTL and this was the result...

The trade in here is a win-win for both teams. PIT gets rid of a goalie before the expansion draft, sheds some cap and adds some much needed depth to their prospect pool. OTT de-clusters their prospect pool (especially at centre and on D) as well as their boat load of picks, and gets a much needed #1 goalie in return taking advantage of the expansion draft situation.

I don't think Jarry gets nearly that return he has not even been a starter for a full nhl season

Sens aren't giving that haul for an unproven Goalie.

Value wise I'd have to agree that the Sens side is a bit greater. But Jarry is still more proven than Jaros and Brown. And I don't see a full-time spot available for Jaros on the Sens and it will be really hard for Brown to have an impact role on the Sens given the prospects coming up including at least 1 centre in picks 3 and 5. I think the upside #1 potential of Jarry might enough to justify losing these 2 prospects. It really wouldn't hurt the Sens pool that much (though don't get me wrong, I still have hope in Brown, but you gotta lose something here). Take away a pick or two from the trade if you want to balance it out more.

I think Brown is still a big trade chip, so I'm not trading him if I'm not getting an established young piece In return.

You have to be realistic here though. Tristian Jarry is a 25 year old goalie who has 62 NHL games under his belt with good stats and potential to be a number 1 goalie. Logan Brown is a 22 year old with 29 NHL games under his belt and only 1 goal. Yes he's had his moments where he's looked really good but he's also had his moments where he's been invisible and I would absolutely not say he is established by any means either. I am a Sens fan and I like Logan Brown, but Tristian Jarry IS a good young piece and I would find it hard to believe that we could get much more than that for Logan Brown.

Rutherford is just waiting until trading Murray is a reality.

My point is that if I'm trading Logan Brown, it's going to be in a package to bring in a young top six forward or top 4 Dman.

If Ottawa were to target a goalie, I'd be way more confident in targeting a guy like Georgiev, who has a way larger sample size of being a good goalie than Jarry who has really only had the one good season in the NHL. I think Georgiev can be had without moving a guy like Brown, too.

This wouldn’t be a bad trade tbh. Would hate to lose Jarry, but if it were for this type of a package, I’d be ok with it. I still think the pens are going to give Jarry a prove it contract next year then just allow Seattle to take the one they don’t protect between him and Murray.

I would love if they could do that. Especially on the wing. But Logan Brown's ceiling is realistically a top 6 forward (2nd line centre) and there's still risk he won't even get there. So I'm not sure teams would be willing to trade an already established young top 6 forward for him because those don't exactly grow on trees and Logan is running out of time quickly to prove he can be that guy. That being said, this trade I made wouldn't exactly be giving him away for free. Like Jarry is a pretty good goalie and you can argue he's even more valuable than a top 6 forward if he continues his play. As for Georgiev, they are practically the same age and have the same amount of experience, but Jarry has slightly better stats so I don't really understand your argument there.

I feel like if WPG wins 1st overall, Logan Brown could make sense for them in a package for Nik Ehlers.

Also my argument is that Georgiev is a year younger, and has a larger sample size of being an above average goalie. Jarry has one good season scewing his numbers, and I haven't got any faith that he can consistently play to that level.

What would you consider a fair example of a package for Ehlers involving Brown?

I don't know, Maybe something like Brown, Thomson, NYI 1st, and at least one 2nd? I'm not totally sure what WPG would be looking for, but finally getting an answer to the 2C hole, and getting an RHD with top 4 upside addresses two issues of their's.

I don't want to give up Lassi, but he'd be a good piece for WPG. Aslo if Ottawa is getting Nik Ehlers, it probably makes more sense to take Drysdale.

Okay good just making sure you weren't valuing L.Brown close to Ehlers 😂. Agree about the Drysdale comment, especially if they get rid of Lassi to get Ehlers.

Yeah no Brown would just be one of the big pieces in a larger package.

When I look at teams that could be potential fits for Logan Brown, I think The Jets are pretty close to the top of the list. They have a need for a really skilled C behind Scheifele, and they have a great wingers to help support Brown and help him establish himself and cement his position in the NHL.
