Winnipeg get Byram who is an all-situations 1st pair LHD prospect. Colorado gets a top 6 forward signed for 5 years who's speed and playstyle fits the team like a glove, along with a LHD replacement for Byram. Winnipeg get Donskoi to replace Ehlers.

  2. 2021 3rd round pick (CGY)

Calgary have only 3 Dmen contracted for 2020/21 and could use some size and physicality on the backend, especially if Hamonic and Brodie leave in UFA.

Can’t see the jets tanking this. Ehlers is great and on a good contract . Byram might be better than Heinola but nothing sure for now. Jets decline I think .

think colorado adds maybe bowers. heinola looks like he could be a stud and the difference between him and byram might not be that big.

To me it just doesn't seem worth it to trade Byram. I think you have to gamble on him being a top2 right now. We can aquire a top 6 player from someone with picks like we did burky. With players being able to make a major impact coming into the league in their first few years i think you have to risk it on Byram. Worst case we get another top 4 dman, who i think would still be worth a top 6 forward in a few more years if needed.

Gotta be a no from Winnipeg. I would be pissed if they pulled the trigger on this trade. Heniola could be just as good as Byram so essentially it's Ehlers for...(squints eyes) JOONAS DONSKOI?

Too one sided in COL favor.
I would simplify the deal by removing Heinola, or if I am WPG, I ask for Bura instead of Donskoi.

COL can then use their cap space to replace Donskoi in free agency

Good point. I forgot about Valimaki when I made the AGM and had a quick glance at Calgary's roster as he is listed in the IR section. Zadorov can play on the right though so it could still work.

This is probably where I'm at. Byram is the better prospect, but I like Heinola quite a bit too. Overall I don't think it's incredibly far off on total value but it's tough to say for sure.

What is certain is that, as of today, Ehlers is the best player in the proposal. Thus, Colorado probably has to add to make it happen. At that point though, maybe it makes more sense for Colorado to go the UFA route for forward.

Maybe it's just not there. Interesting to think about though.

I actually like Donskoi as a player, just not for Ehlers!

What has Byram done in the NHL so far? This trade shows that he is the best NHLer. Horrible deal for the Jets

That's not what it shows. It shows Winnipeg upgrading from a very good D prospect to probably the best in the league and downgrading, but still staying afloat, at forward. It's the opposite for the Avs.

I get your point about what has Byram done in the NHL, but plenty of trades involve established players for prospects. It all depends on how you view Byram vs Heinola and to a lesser extent Ehlers vs Donskoi. Some feel as though Byram is the next Makar, Hughes, etc. If you think that but don't think the same about Heinola then it might make sense.

Personally I don't think I'd do it from Winnipeg's perspective unless Colorado adds (but not sure what), and then Colorado might not do it. I I don't think it's that far off in terms of value though. Some on this thread (IMO) are undervaluing how difficult it is to get a D prospect like Byram (or at least Byram as thought of by many).

Personally I wouldn't do this trade from a Colorado perspective. Ehlers is good, but 2nd line wingers are much easier to find than top pairing Dmen - especially when they are still young and/or on ELC's.

Yes, we would get Heinola back, but he doesn't fit this Avs top 4 as well as Byram does, since he's a bit undersized, and we already have a couple of undersized guys in Makar and Girard. We need at least one of our top 4 LHD's to kill penalties well, and Byram does that (eg. he was Canada's top shutdown Dman at the WJC).

Whilst Ehlers is a perfect fit for this Avs team, I think we should be able to get a solid top 6 forward in UFA or via trade without giving up too much, and then keeping a stacked D with Byram.

I probably agree. It is enough to make me think though. I sure would like Ehlers.

Wouldn't mind Samberg either (have had my eye on him for a while). How about Zadorov and a third for Samberg and a second? Basically Winnipeg pays a bit to get a defenseman now rather that later.

Winnipeg fans likely wouldn't even trade Samberg for Zadorov 1-for-1. Samberg has top-pairing potential. That said if they want to go the prospect route he's the guy it would probably take to entice Colorado into moving Zadorov even within the division.

I wouldn't go that far on Samberg. Top four sure, but top pairing might be a little much. Obviously there is a chance, but he projects to be more of a complementary piece (though a good one) than a true top two guy (imo).

That's how Winnipeg fans see him anyways. Maybe a bit biased though perhaps.

Probably a bit biased. I watch a fair amount of college hockey (specifically NCHC) as I'm a DU fan. I like Samberg a lot as a stay at home guy who can skate and has a bit of a mean streak. Sound like anyone we know? Lol.

To me it's a pretty fair proposal, but Samberg is also exempt from the Xdraft, which helps.
