I dont want FA

Description
I don’t want big money spent this offseason. I don’t want any 5-7 year deals.

Tough sell in the Canucks market, but let Marky go, keep Domingue who’s a solid backup. Ride Demko, and worst case, if he isn’t ready, him and Domingue split time.

Is this taking a step back? Yes. Does it give Vancouver flexibility in cap? Also yes.

Things change, players don’t pan out, etc etc. But this is why I don’t really Toffoli resigned this offseason. Getting him or a Hoffman or a Dadonov, would be beneficial for the short term no doubt, but FA all want money and term. Will their contracts still be worth it in year 4, 5, 6?

With the potential of the prospects coming up, it could end being another contract(s) Vancouver would have to move out. You gotta have ELCs on the books when you’re contending because you can’t win when everyone’s making $5 mill a year. The math just don’t work.

You also have to assume VAN will move out one or more of the bottom 6 contracts (Beagle, Eriksson etc) plus the expansion draft, so there’d be some more cap room to play with.

You can resign Edler on the cheap once his current deal is done. Keep Tanev, on a 2-3 if he’s taking a “hometown discount”

So yeah, no big FA signings this “summer”.

Domingue isn't a " solid backup ". You should try to get a G who can share games with Demko like Khudobin, Talbot, Greiss for one/two years until DiPietro is ready. And agreed, VAN shouldn't do much in FA.

Fair point. I guess solid was the wrong word to use lol. I wouldn’t be against signing a Khudobin on a 2 year deal, for a “cheap” cost.

I mostly agree with you. Despite Benning giving up a 1st in the Miller trade and a 2nd/Madden for the Toffoli rental, this team is still on the way up and can't afford to be chasing big-money FA's. I think they should definitely move on from Tanev unless he'll take a one year deal, and Toffoli would be nice but they can't afford him unless a significant bad contract heads out.

The only exception for me is with Markstrom; he's the team MVP two years in a row and should continue to play at a high level the next few seasons. Will he take a reasonable cap hit to stay in VAN? And if he does, could Demko be used as the trade bait in a package to get rid of an Eriksson/Beagle/Roussel? There's a lot of hurdles there, but I'm betting the team will look hard at making something like that work if they're really convinced on bringing Marky back.

Agreed, Vancouver and New York should not make many off season moves. Both have solid depth coming up in the pipeline and have a few exciting prospects to lock up in 1-2 years. Keep the cap space

Agreed. I would no doubt love to have Marky AND Demko here for the future, but like you said, Demko might/probably could be used as a sweetener somewhere.

Does DiPietro carry any value?? Package him and a pick instead of Demko? I’ve never been that high on DiPietro, and don’t like his size. Great junior player and fared well in the AHL this year. But when you have ELITE snipers picking corners all day long, is he really gonna be a good NHL tendy when he’s giving up 5” above his shoulders?

We have a 1 year layover before likely all of Podkolzin, Hoglander and Lind seriously compete for spots. That's the main reason I don't understand why people are so intent on keeping Toffoli; we have help on the way. Leivo should take a 1 year show me deal after his season was lost to injury. That's the perfect stop gap.

However, I don't think the Canucks will be able to stand pat as you've done. Moving out at least one of Eriksson, Roussel or Beagle will be almost a requirement if they don't want to fall off a cliff, and management and ownership have indicated that they only want to get better.

I've gone back and forth on deciding whether or not to re-sign Markstrom and I'm good either way I guess. I'm glad I'm not making that decision.

Any extra money should be invested in the defense.

I think DiPietro definitely has value, especially because he'll be expansion exempt. The question is whether the Canucks or another team values his upside enough to be an eventual starter.
