I would really prefer not to trade Virtanen (especially within the division), but that's some serious value. If you the retention is taken out then it would be as close as you can get to an undeniable deal.

I truly feel the Ducks are overpaying both times. Why, Im not sure. If the goal is to get a RW and RHD, they can achieve both for better cost IMO.

My feeling was that the retention is what keeps you from having to make it a first-round draft pick, but that may be my unconscious pro-Anaheim bias asserting itself.

Thanks for the shout-out.

I would be happy if we swung either deal, and greatly happy if we did both, but Bob Murray is a conservative kinda guy, so I won't get my hopes up.

I would still be willing to let Florida have the best of the third-element draft swap.

Retaining for two years is also not ideal.

We'd definitely add something extra to make it work.

See, my thinking is that cap retention and salary retention can be different, so if this trade is made on the second day of the off-season, Vancouver has paid Eriksson his $3 million signing bonus and there goes the entire salary retention. I don't think that the cap retention of $1.5 million is going to make a significant impact on being able to re-up Pettersson and Hughes 'cause you've got the $6 million from Edler (minus an ELC replacement) and the $2 million from Benn (ditto) plus the $4.5 million from Eriksson being subtracted from where you are now plus, as I recall, Baertschi's hit coming off, too.

In a vacuum, 1.5M in dead cap space isn't a lot. However, when you look at the Canucks situation it will be added to a pile that is already simply too large. We'll have the Luongo recapture at just over 3M, retained salary at 1.5M, Baertschi's buried cap hit at over 2M and bonus overages for Pettersson and Hughes at 1.7M. That's over 8M in dead cap space, which is obviously not ideal. If we have to include something else to prevent us from retaining, I think it would be worth it.

The bonus overages will occur in 2020-2021?

Yes. Pettersson and Hughes hit 1.7M in performance bonuses and since Ferland was on LTIR for pretty much the whole the year we have no real cap space banked. That means that they will carry over into next year. However, the league gave teams an option due to COVID and the flat cap: you can either pay the full overage next year or split it over two years.

However, both Pettersson and Hughes are virtual locks to hit 1.7M in performance bonuses again next season. If they finish top 10 in some major categories league wide, then it could be as high as 3.7M+ for the following year when we have to sign them.

How do I figure out what the performance bonuses are for a team?

If you go to your teams cap friendly page, the name with the trophy icon are contracts with bonuses. Usually it's ELC players that have them. From there you can look at their schedule A and schedule B bonuses and then look up what they have to do to hit them.

Honestly I just asked a bunch of smarter people on forums lol.

Well, my two local teams are both so crummy I'd be surprised if anybody hit their performance goals . . .
