First, the Devils exchange Vancouver's 2020 1st for their 2021 unprotected first after a shocking game 5 loss in the qualifier to Minnesota.

Then, the Blackhawks win the lottery and instantly become a contender.

Before the draft the Devils take on the entirety of James Neal contract and the 18th overall pick for Devils former first rounder Mike McLeod and a 4th. Mike will play with his brother Ryan in Edmonton in a bottom 6 role.

The Red Wings shock everyone taking Alexander Holtz fourth and the Devils are lucky to take the best defenseman Jamie Drysdale at seventh.

They address their need for a two way scoring winger in Jack Quinn with Arizona's top 10 pick.

With Askarov still on the board ahead of the goalie needy Calgary Flames, the Devils trade up with Columbus by sending Edmonton's first, the Bruins 4th, and buying out Brandon Dubinsky's contract to move up four spots and take the Russian goalie.

At the end of the second round, the Devils send Joey Anderson out to Los Angeles to develop with his brother Mikey.

In the offseason the Devils elect to sit out on free agency and instead make an interesting hockey trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks decide to move on from prior free agent acquisitions Calvin De Haan and Andrew Shaw sending their 2021 top 3 protected first to NJ in exchange for two years of the younger, offensive minded Will Butcher, young winger Jesper Boqvist, and the Islanders second. This saves the Blackhawks 4 million in salary the next two years and provides more depth scoring as Jesper reunites with his brother Adam Boqvist.

Columbus will need more tbh. Dubinsky is LTIR (retired) so there’s really no reason to buy him out, when he doesn’t go against the cap and when insurance pays most of his salary.

If I'm the Hawks, I probably do it, but I would make the 1st conditional on Shaw. He's a big wild card, obviously with concussions and how much is he gonna actually play when he comes back and how's he gonna perform. I'd probably do like if Shaw gets like 50 points or plays 75 games it becomes a 2nd.

I don't think there need to be any picks exchanged in the chicago deal.

I'd be inclined to agree... but not all that much more, IMO. Removing Dubinsky certainly isn't a priority, but for all of four spots in the 1st round, and getting a pick besides? I'd want the pick to be a little higher (or maybe add a future late-round pick or something), but otherwise I think it's fine.

We'll take Drysdale or Raymond before Perfetti.

I could see picks being swapped since Jersey will be taking on greater risk because of the injury history for both of De Haan and Shaw. I don't see a 1st and a 2nd being swapped, maybe a 2nd for a 3rd or 4th.

4th and 5th next year to Chicago for a 3rd this year?

Jersey might push for a 2nd, or have it be picks from this year depending on when the trade is made in relation to the draft, but I think that the overall value would be fair in either case.

I think Chicago pushes harder to keep the 2nd, I don't think the players we are getting back are THAT much better than what we have now. Any higher than a third going to NJD is overkill as far as I'm concerned.

I don't either. I think De Haan is a better player than Butcher and I highly doubt Boqvist even sniffs playing on the 2nd line on a contender. The hiccup that I see is the injury history of Shaw and De Haan driving up the asking price. I would prefer to give up a 3rd at most, but Bowman has been known to overpay when trading for players (ie Shaw and Maatta trades) which made me think the 2nd would be more "realistic".

drop the picks from the hawks trade and we'll add a 3rd. Boqvist, Butcher for Shaw, Dehaan, and a 3rd
