Lets get this defense fixed once and for all

Description
It's an overloaded defense for sure, but balanced. Realistically any pairing could play as the 1st pairing depending on match ups. In this situation, if the Habs are in a playoff / contending spot come 2021 trade deadline, you keep Petry as your "own rental". If Habs aren't in the playoff picture, you move Petry for assets at the deadline, and give #3RD to either Juulsen or Fleury.

Resign Kovalchuk as a mentor for Romanov and *fingers crossed* Lafreniere.

Sign a decent back up for once. Try and keep the cap hit low, add year or two on contract to do this. I chose Greiss, but Crawford, Dell, C.Anderson also other options.

One more tweak you could add that Habs would still have cap space for is another vet 4th liner (Thompson). Send Evans back to Laval and you still have over $2mil in cap space.

I think overall, this gives Bergevin one last year to "go for it". If it still doesn't work, with all the expiring contracts and the expansion draft, perfect time to officially rebuild around Lafreniere and move on from the old core players.

Fixing the Defense and acquiring Shayne Gostisbehere is counter productive. Also, why would you acquire Dumba just to play Petry on the third pair. May as well deal him at the deadline since there’s no need in having a player that good playing minimal minutes.

I literally wrote that in the description lol
I think how this defense would be constructed, you wouldn't necessarily have a "3rd pairing" and can basically play every guy 20 minutes a night. As I said, you could play a specific pairing more than the other depending on the match ups too.

As for Ghost, the way I see it, in the defensive zone, Ghost = Mete, which is not all that great. In transition, Ghost > Mete, but you can definitely make a case that they're =. in the offensive zone, Ghost >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mete. and you can actually play Ghost on the PP, Mete is basically useless on the point on the PP #NoShot frown

Also, one thing us Habs fans must realize (soon, not necessarily now), is as good as a one-two punch Weber and Petry have been for the past 4 seasons (which unfortunately due to Weber's injuries has been that much). Weber will be 35 in two weeks, and Petry is 32 on an expiring contract. Getting someone like Dumba (who might be available!!) is probably what's best to prepare MTL for their eventual decline or in Petry's case, departure. It's a proactive approach. Waiting for either or situation (decline or departure) and then just hoping / expecting Juulsen, Fleury, Brook to fill in their shoes is just bad management and incredibly reactive. imo if the Habs can acquire Dumba, they should jump on it!

I’m not opposed with acquiring Dumba. I’m actually for it, but there’s no point in keeping Petry if we acquire him. we may as well trade him as a rental if we get Dumba.

I know Montreal doesn't want Brodin (why, though?) but Wild isn't moving Dumba for Domi. We can get a much better center for Dumba.

Like who?

Same can be said for Brodin, Habs probably are interested in him, but they could get a much better Dman than him for Domi.

After the season he had, this is probably the best we can do. After the play-ins, that could all change since Dumba has looked like his old self prior to his injury. I'm not a fan of moving Brodin/Dumba for Domi, for the record, since Domi has really only had the one season of brilliance and the rest has been just ok.

I think the right value for Brodin would be Drouin... higher ceilling than Domi...
INstead of acquiring 2 Def.. simply fixed your LH side once for all with Brodin... and we can trade Mete or let go to Seattle.
With the UFA winger available next off-season... it would be easier to find someone TOP 6: Dandonov, Hoffman, Granlund to name a few..

Drouin... shakes head I'd rather just hang on to Brodin and Dumba

You think Cirelli is a better option at top 6 C than Domi? And you’d be willing to move Dumba for him?!
Would love to debate you on this lol care to begin?
