Lottery win and True Rebuild

Created by: Campabee
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 30, 2020
Published: Jul. 30, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know that this is a huge long shot that MB would never consider but just wanted to see what we could look like with a few major moves and true rebuild.

Cutting down the number of FA's to sign at the end of 2020-21 while improving the team drastically with a quick rebuild.

Not sure if Dallas considers the Petry trade or not just figured their right side is not great.

    A high 1st and a 2nd for Domi and Lekhonen? You’re dreaming.

    I don't think so

    1. Domi is a very good 2 C option for the Sabres and and worth 8 OVA in my opinion. Lehkonen is worth a mid second in this draft but I pushed the 2nd to the 2021 draft so as to sell a little lower on Lehkonen.

Perhaps the Habs need to add a 3rd but I font think they do. IMO this is a fair hockey trade.

Domi isn’t worth a top 10 pick alone. He might be worth a pick Around 20. A Top 10 pick should be a guaranteed first line player or top pairing Defender. You said yourself he’s not a 1st liner. Lehkonen is a decent player who might maybe score 15-17 goals with regular powerplay time. He’s also not a top 6 forward. On a good day he’s worth a 3rd rounder.

Harley and a first?? No thanks. Not giving up any of Harley, Dell, or JRob. And he’s too old for the extension to hold any value imho

Make is a conditional second if he re-signs or they make it to the CF in the Dallas trade.

Remove the second in the Buffalo deal.

NHL draft is October 9th you can make the Domi for 8th overall trades for a couple more months as long as you know it has a zero percent chance of happening.

Fixed the Buffalo trade and the Stars trade already had Petry resigned at 5.5 Mil x 4 years

No it’s not. If they want to grab a 40-50 point center they can just sign Erik Haula for a cheaper price without losing out on a good talent.

I’m not saying Petry isn’t a good player. I’m saying giving up one of our few a level prospects for an older defenseman is a bad idea. Giving him his next deal is a bad idea as well imo

If Montreal needed a good 2C and he just had the same numbers as the last 2 seasons on another team while never having played center before absolutely I would. NO draft pick is garunteed to ever make the NHL. Not even 1st OVA. For that reason I would take a proven player of Domi's caliber for as high as 5th OVA. Just look at this year's draft class for an example of what centers are going to be available from 5-10, Perfetti, Rossi and Lundell. Perfetti is 5'10' 185 lbs, Rossi is 5'9" 178 lbs and Lundell is 6'1" 183 lbs of the 3 Lundell has the best shot at making the NHL as a center due to his size. Lundell on the other hand will likely top out at Domi's level IF he ever makes the NHL. If I could garuntee that both Rossi and Perfetti make the NHL and live up to their potential then yes I take them over Domi. However no one can garuntee that. And the risk of Lundell never making the NHL when his ceiling is similar to Domi's level out weighs the value of picking him over trading for a proven player like Domi.

Buffalo doesn't need Lehkonen, we have too many LWs, we need centers and RWs.

Really!? Petry is worth 1st + A prospect + 2nd and we are sending a top 2nd as well for just Harley + 1st

I don’t think Dallas would make that move. Miro can play as a RD without any issues. With Harley coming up (possibly at the start of next season), there isn’t much room to budget Petry.

Also, the Covid Cap Crunch doesn’t give much room for trading high quality, low cap players. On top of that, Dallas needs the 1st rounder.

That's why I had Cogliano as part of the trade his nearly 3.5 Mil essentially means they get Petry for 2 Mil cap hit but I was told that was the value was not there in my original post of

    Petry + Fleury + 2nd + 3rd for Harley + 1st + Cogliano

I wouldn’t want to get rid of Harley and a 1st. Cogliano doesn’t matter since he will fall off the books in a year. The Covid Era might last four years with no cap increase. Add in Miro and Klingberg’s extensions, and you’ll see that Dallas can’t afford Petry. Plus Petry is 32.

Fleury currently has bottom pair D stamped on him.

I wouldn’t make the trade, because it doesn’t help Dallas long term. Now if Dallas moves up in the draft, we might find a fit. Still, I don’t see this happening.
