Quoting: BeterChiarelli
Best it likely gets is Mittelstadt and the #8 overall, and that might turn some Sabres' fans off from the deal.
Monahan is a poor-man's top-line center, and I think the last few years have been evident of that. He lost the role to Lindholm a few times over the past 2 seasons iirc. I don't think you'll get that much more of a return than what Stastny fetched the Blues when they traded him to Winnipeg: sure, Monahan is younger and has a bit of term, but Stastny represents inflated value at the deadline. The two are about equivalent players, so I'd reckon it's worth using that trade as a comparable.
No, the best comparable is Matt Duchene.
Matt Duchene had averaged 0.73 points per game and 0.30 goals per game in 8 seasons with Colorado and was traded at 27 years old with one and a half seasons left on his deal for:
Shane Bowers (taken in the 1st round just months earlier)
2019 1st round pick (ended up being Bowen Byram)
2019 3rd round pick
Kyle Turris ( a 27 year old C who was coming off a 27g 55p season)
Then the Avs flipped Turris for:
Samuel Girard ( a 20 year old former 2nd rounder)
Vladislav Kamenev (a 21 year old former 2nd rounder)
2018 2nd round pick
That equates to basically two 1st rounders, three 2nd rounders and a 3rd rounder for 1.5 years guaranteed of 27 year old Matt Duchene and his 0.73 ppg and 0.30 goals per game.
Monahan if traded would be a 25 year old C with three years left on his deal and has averaged 0.76 ppg and 0.36 goals per game
Duchene was then traded a year and a half later as a rental for two more prospects and another 1st round pick plus a conditional 1st round pick.
