Finding A 2C

Created by: Skytown
Team: 2020-21 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 30, 2020
Published: Jul. 31, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
One year after having one of their own offer sheeted, it’s time for them to try their hand at it.

Some of the “top” RFA C are...

Cirelli: 5 years @ $6,500,000 = 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Hintz: 5 years @ $6,000,000 = 1st, 3rd
Dylan Strome: 5 years @ $5,500,000 = 1st, 3rd

I’m almost certain all teams would match and say thank you very much. Except for Tampa, as they have their cap issues. But you never know what BrisBois has up his sleeve.

So yeah, there you have it.

Puljujarvi doesn't get Carolina out of Niederreiter without some sort of considerable sweetener included. Like Drury or picks.

Given that his stance has softened considerably regarding rejoining the Oilers and that there are good odds of Edmonton making at least the second round this year, there's going to be mutual interest for Puljujarvi to play in Edmonton. The Oilers are going to want a cheap winger to plug and play in their middle-six, and it gives Puljujarvi a chance to prove himself on a contending team. Holland has always been very explicit that acquiring Puljujarvi from the get-go was going to be expensive, and it's going to be even more so now that there's legs to the idea of JP coming home.

Nino is one of the best defensive forwards in hockey, and is a winger who's made to play with elite centers. The fact you even hinted he was a bad contract proves you don't watch enough of Niederreiter.

This isn't enough of a return for a player with 60+ point upside like nino

I know I'm missing the point, but couldn't Trocheck fill that hole? On a team like Carolina and fully healthy, seems like he could really succeed in that spot

I always thought that, but I’ve seen a few posts saying that Carolina needs a number two, so idk lol

Thinking Nino isn't a cap dump or is justifiably a 60+ point player suggests you don't watch enough hockey outside of anything the Hurricanes are involved in.

Teams don't (or shouldn't) pay for upside. He was on a 35-point pace this season. Outside of the streak he had with the Hurricanes last season and his career year of 57 points (going on four seasons ago), nothing about Nino consistently hints at him being a 60-point player. Historically, he's been a middle-six winger, and I'm not trading Puljujarvi - expected to also be a middle-six winger for next years' Oilers - for $3.5M more of the same thing. Carolina is shedding a contract here: what the justification for Edmonton taking on an additional $3.5M?

"PuLjUjArVi IsN't EnOuGh Of A rEtUrN". Care to justify why this AGM doubles what he's expected to make on his return to the NHL and plays him premier minutes on the top line?

Carolina really has no need to trade for a 2c. They got Trocheck who is a nice placeholder until Geekie is ready.

Yes Trocheck IS our 2C. He is a player that Waddell said he had been looking to acquire for a year leading up to the trade. RBA wanted a right handed center. Cirelli would be a luxury and we may be able to put Aho on the wing but there is really no need.

I agree with Jerry Seinfeld.

Pulju isn't even an NHL asset. You can't say "oH pUlJu" because Nino is better in EVERY way. Niederreiter was on 40 point pace, and still plays one of the best defensive games among forwards in hockey! Thinking he is a cap dump shows you know NOTHING about him!

Puljujarvi's NHLe while playing as the best player on his Finnish team was a 30+ point pace. If we're willing to reach the conclusion that Puljujarvi will not be the best player on the Oilers next season, we can reasonably assume that his production should be higher than his 30-some odd point pace he played with this season.

So far, we've logically established the following:
1. Puljujarvi will cost - at minimum - $3.5M less than Niederreiter does, even with $750k retained
2. There is reason to believe Puljujarvi will produce similarly to Niederreiter
3. Carolina is in a cap squeeze regardless of whether they're adding Cirelli or not and need to find a way to shed some salary

The only credibility I can find to your argument is the SINGLE second-place vote for the Selke that Nino received in 2016-17. His oisv% has been effectively sub-.900 for the past four seasons and his zone starts have always been biased towards offensive zone starts. Hell, last year the Hurricanes almost religiously kept Niederreiter out of their own end. All you're offering is anecdotal evidence that Niederreiter is good at playing defence and denying - despite Carolina's previous attempts to trade quality assets for Puljujarvi earlier this season - that JP isn't even an NHL asset. Do YOU know more than the Carolina Hurricanes?

At some point you have to stop digging if you want to get out of the hole.
