Interesting idea. But you can first of all assume that Makar wouldn't sign an OS to play in Montreal. He's much closer to home (Calgary) by playing in Colorado, and Colorado are one of the top contenders, so he has absolutely no reason to leave.

i'd imagine colorado matches but 4 1st round picks from this team in extremely tempting.

it's tempting because this habs team looks like it would be a lottery team for 4 years and paying makar 12m is difficult. take a look at the top 5 picks of the last 4 drafts for reference, even at #5, or #7. next do a 2021-22 roster with an $81.5m cap with makar making 12m and put your money where you mouth is and post it since is clearly such a good idea. next realize that the avs can't keep makar, byram, girard, and timmins together forever and still keep mack, landeskog, and rantanen. losing makar would suck but with 4 lottery picks and $12m in unused cap it's not a death blow.

It's a death blow to our cup chances during our prime cup years. We don't need picks as much as we need Makar on the ice producing at 70 point pace.

You could get some 1sts, but the chances that any of them ends up in the top 5 would be pretty small, and even if they did you'd be lucky if one ended up anywhere near Makar's level.

i think the avs could win with with girard, byram, and trade timmins with picks for an upgrade. then you have a very solid defense core. do you think the avs can win with makar and mackinnon taking up $24m. even if the cap is up to $90m by then your talking about over 1/4 of the cap on two players. then add rantanen at $9.25m and landeskog probably takes at least $8m and that's almost half your cap. i'd say the odds are the same either way but one gets you there sooner while the other takes longer but likely gives you an even longer window.
