1st OA

Created by: cunningham19
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 1, 2020
Published: Aug. 1, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What is the realistic cost for Ottawa to acquire the 1st OA? Is it a young roster player like duclair or white + 3rd OA + a prospect or pick or is it more?

If there is a way for Ottawa to acquire it without having to move 5th OA they have to find a way to make it happen.

IMO it'll all come down to who gets the pick and what needs they have whether it's defence wing or centre bc if they need a centre trading down to get stutzle byfield Rossi or perfetti is going to be easier than if they need a winger.

Maybe 3OA + Batherson/Branstrom/Norris + Duclair maybe. Where the Sens are at currently I would keep 3rd and 5th. I dont think the drop off between Laf and Stutzle/Byfield is as large as people think. Plus you add a Drysdale or Raymond and you're off and running

I really don't think it makes sense. Sens need to get that C at 3rd overall more than they need Lafreniere. As good as he is, I'm not comfortable paying the huge "1st overall" price tag to get a Winger.

I agree they need a centre but they need scoring more. A player like Byfield isn't as elite of a scorer as Laf and same goes for Stutzle.

I guess it comes down to WHAT would you be willing to give up in order to have Lafreniere and Rossi VS Byfield and Rossi. For me, the answer is NOT TOO MUCH and yet, it would be FAR TOO MUCH.

You'll get more scoring overall by staying put. Whether the cost would be 3+5 or 3+Batherson or whatever it is, you'll get more scoring overall from keeping the assets you have, than you'd get from just Lafreniere.

I also think it’s the 3OA + 5OA.

IF it were to happen, it would only be an option if a couple team won.

OTT would need to take an ungodly cap hit, offer 1/2 NHL ready players, the 5 and another prospect.

It would look something like:

To OTT:

Lucic/Neal/Ericsson/Seabrook + 1OA ( maybe + another small hit... Baertschi/Sutter as an example)

To CGY/EDM/VAN/CHI:

Tierney/CBrown + Batherson/Norris + 5OA + NYI(1st)/33OA

I would be willing to take a big cap hit, move a bunch of good roster players, and willing to move any picks other than 3OA

Probably costs Brannstrom if you don't wanna move 5OA.

3OA + Brannstrom

Or Tkachuk + 5OA

Maybe Chabot with a bunch of bad contracts coming back.

i don't think you offer is enough .
the team who win 1st overall will ask for one of Tkatchuk or Chabot at least if not both
just look at the Lindros trade when he was trade to Phili (Forsberg,Simon,Ricci, Duschene, huffman,Hextall,1st round 1993, 1st round 1994 + 15 million (at that time we could trade player for money))
i dont say it will take as much as him but close to it and your offer is far from it
if you want the 1st overall it's gonna hurt , a lot.

To move back 2-4 spots it wouldn't cost either of chabot or tkachuk. Ottawa has a bunch of seconds over the next two years I think it'll include a tierney / duclair 5th OA abramov and probably 2 seconds that's what I would offer. Chabot tkachuk Norris brannstrom batherson are no goes

It's become rare that a first overall gets traded. The last time it happened was in 2003:

FOA1.png

So hypothetically, it would be a player + the 3rd + the 2nd rounder. Although I imagine the value of the first overall as increased in the past 17 years.

EDIT: I also believe that the 2003 draft wasn't as clear cut who would go where, so keep that in mind too. Lafreniere is consensus the first overall in this draft, so you're trading for the guarantee of him.

The value has definitely increased for a first overall pick but this year is a year of firsts or unheard of happenings with the possibility of a top 10 team in the NHL winning the first overall pick so never say never
