Kubalik Offersheet

Created by: Richard88
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 2, 2020
Published: Aug. 2, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A 3 year x $5m OS gets Kubalik paid and straight to UFA. Chicago are pressed for capspace in 2020/21 so they'd have to consider whether to match or not.

Whether Chicago matches or not, an OS is a win-win for Colorado. Either they get a young top 6 forward signed through to Mackinnon's contract and only give up a late 1st + 3rd, or they force Chicago to pay Kubalik higher than they'd like and thereby limit a division rivals' ability to improve their roster during Toews and Kane's last few good years due to the cap.

On another note, I've been to Kubalik's hometown in Plzen and can say that it's a charming town. There's an old church with a super high steeple that's worth climbing for some breathtaking views, after which you can enjoy some great beer in the city where Pilsner beer orignates from. :)

If he keeps playing like this that might be the AAV he's looking at anyway! The 3 years is definitely not ideal though, but I feel like he would be loyal to the team that gave him his chance in the NHL

Hawks match. the only part about that deal that stinks is the 3 years. His AAV on a longer deal will probably be around 6-6.5 mil if he keeps this up. Hopefully either 2 years x4.5-5 mil or 6x6. Jake Guentzel type contract seems perfect for both sides

Are you sure Jost is worth a 2nd? I know he’s good defensively, but he doesn’t provide much offense.

I think he gets more even without OS. Probably need to go to 6.3M

Andrew Shaw got 2 2nd's and also 2nd + 3rd, so I don't see why Jost shouldn't get at least a 2nd. The guy is a cheap young 3rd liner who's reliable defensively and also has the skill to potentially to break out into a top 6 forward.

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate your friendly responses. smile

I wasn't sure what sort of contract Kubalik would get, but I figure that 3 years taking him straight to UFA would get him to listen. Would Chicago be able to match at $6.3m x 3 years? Avs can afford to add a forward at that price at least until 2023.

Hawks will find a way to match it. Moves have to be made no matter what, but we would very easily move Saad to save that 6 mil to be able to match. Dehaan, Maata, Smith, Shaw are also all guys who could potentially be moved to be able to sign Kubalik and Strome. If you want the hawks to not match it you probably have to give him 7 mil

True, I just don’t see it being a fit in Buffalo.

They probably match but there's a chance they don't. I think it would be worthwhile.

At 5.5M they just match easily and thank you for negotiating for them.

Yeah offersheets only are successful when it's an egregious overpay. 7 million and the Hawks might not match

Why not? Buffalo aren't exactly blessed with defensively reliable talent in their bottom 6. Jost would be a solid addition for that team.

They need a 2nd line center. They have Olofsson-Eichel-Reinhart.
Skinner x x
Johansson Cozens/Mittlestadt- Kahun. I don’t think Jost fits in the 2nd line role.
