NYR Prediction 20-21

Created by: rja
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 26, 2020
Published: Aug. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
As of today, this is my prediction of what the NYR roster will look like in 20-21.

- I do not think any team would be willing to trade for Henrik, even if NYR retain half the contract. I think management wants both of their young goaltenders, so Henrik will likely be bought out. Buying out Staal and Smith do make sense, but given NYR will probably try to maximize their cap space on a buy out, and because there is a three goalie carousel going on currently, Henrik would be my guess.
-Unsure exactly how the terms for the Strome and Deangelo contracts will look, but I think it could be around the 5x5.25 ballpark.
-Lewis is merely an example for a bottom 6 veteran to step in as the 13th forward, although I think he would be a great signing for NYR.

I'd rather non-qualify Strome than Re-Sign him.

what the rangers need is another solid LD, Staal is good as a third pairing guy, Lindgren is the future, Smith sucks, and Deangelo is just not an ideal LD

if availible they should look into drafting Sanderson, Rourke, or Guhle
or
Trade deangelo for a top pairing LD like Brodin or something

I am only predicting what I think will happen; not my personal preferences.

-Deangelo developed in Sarnia playing the left side, so I think he is more than capable than playing on that side. He should work well with Trouba, who could focus on being a shutdown defenseman.
-I think they are waiting for K'Andre Miller to come up, who may need another season before coming up. Hajek has apparently improved during camp, and Rykov is still an option as well. Management probably feels like they have the LHD already in their organization; they just need to develop. NYR will have about $20 million open up with the decreases on the Shattenkirk and Henrik buyouts, and the dissolution of the Smith and Staal contracts. After that, they will have more flexibility to spend.
-And as stated above, I am only predicting what I think will happen; these are not personal preferences.

Could certainly see Strome's contract have less AAV and it is highly likely he will not have a full NMC; I'd venture to say his trading rights would be much narrower. But after what he has done this season he either wants a long term deal or would rather just go to arbitration and sign a 1-year deal and then walk into UFA the following offseason. I think NYR will prefer to get him to a deal that they are comfortable with and retain 5 of their top 6 forwards.
