You Know What - Brindy Might Be Right About Edmundson All Along

Created by: Hockyluv21
Team: 2019-20 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 3, 2020
Published: Aug. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
He was an easy whipping target for the analytical types like me in the regular season, but there's something about playoff hockey, perhaps because of how the leaguewide pace begins to slow somewhat, that makes a presence like Eddy valuable in the postseason. He's even begun to join rushes with Skjei next to him, and it's kind of hilarious to watch. Maybe Brindy will make him the number 6 when Hamilton comes back, though I'd still prefer Fleury.

As the only defender that hits or fights regularly, that is why he is in. His play leaves a lot to be desired. Passing right to the Rangers in the D zone, icing the puck at the end of the period for no reason, etc.

You can pick on specific plays here and there, but our team defense has honestly been near-flawless this series so far. The overall effect of them swarming on the forecheck with the Rangers helpless to stop it is something to behold. I'm going to trust Rod over myself here hahahaha

Rod has his guilty pleasures and he cant help himself.

Faulk on PP1: eyeroll
Edmundson over better defenders
Not letting rookies play more
Aho wouldn’t have seen PK time last season if Staal didn’t get hurt and force Rod to use him.

If you can call them mistakes, then it's certainly not hurting Rod's results too much. And he's open to giving rookies playing time if they deserve it (see Geekie at 4C).

Its sad that he has to be forced to use the no brainer options. They aren’t helping his decisions either.

I understand no using Dougie on PP1 when his hand was broken. After it healed, there is 0 justification for playing ‘cant hit the net Faulk’ over Dougie. That is just one.

The Canes just have a different mindset in the postseason. Rod could well be the next Torts or Trotz in this league with how he's able to get everyone, including young skill guys, to buy into a defensive system. Teams like the Leafs could really use a coach like him, much like how Washington needed Trotz.

Their offense is what’s more impressive imo. Every coach claims to be defensive but hardly any can get that kind of attack out of a team.

There's "defensive" coaches (most of the NHL), and then there are elite defensive coaches, like the three that I'm referring to. You can tell who these guys are based on which clubs are actually stifling scoring opportunities this postseason. The difference between Carolina and a club like the Isles or the Jackets is that they have the kind of offensive skill to dominate possession AND suppress shots.

Their defensive system is good, but the 2018 to 2020 canes from a shot-creation/Xg perspective are pretty much unmatched since the nhl started tracking shot locations.

I forgot another very good defensive coach: the guy that coached Dallas before he was fired over alcohol abuse. I think that his name was Montgomery.

Yeah, that's true. I'm just saying that a huge reason why they're such an elite shot-creation team is because that team is constructed from the back-end out. Having Slavin/Dougie/Pesce and company creating an island in the back opens up the forwards to shoot to their heart's content.

Also, I forgot to say this: EVERY great coach has their eccentricities. Take Barry Trotz with Tom Kuhnhackl. Elite results tend to give guys like Trotz and now Brindy a ton of leeway. Finally, I need to show you this: https://twitter.com/hayyyshayyy/status/1290358498304430081/photo/2
