Interesting idea. I'd do it without Beckman and I'd imagine the Caps would want Brodin to come with an extension which would give Brodin more value

I actually don't, for two reasons.

1) expansion draft. They don't have to worry about protecting him.

2) expiring contracts. Inking Ovechkin and Vrana is likely going to cost them a good chunk of money, which might leave them without the necessary funds to re-sign Brodin. This is where a prospect like Beckman comes in. It evens out the value of potentially losing him. But it's mostly dependent on how much Brodin wants on his next contract.

If Beckman is the dealbreaker, I assume they'd demand at least a conditional 2nd rounder going their way if Brodin walks.

Can't make trades based on contract extensions under the new CBA frown I'd probably be fine with just throwing them our 2nd or next year's 3rd. Beckman looks fantastic

Sorry, but I don't really see why the Caps do this. Domi's a huge downgrade from Kuznetsov, Orlov for Brodin seems to be roughly a wash (admittedly I don't see the Wild that often so I don't know Brodin that well) and doesn't solve the Caps' left/right imbalance on defense, swapping Panik for Donato is a downgrade, and Beckman and the 1st as sweeteners aren't what the Caps will be looking for as they try to compete as much as possible in the twilight of Ovie's career. This is a move a team makes when they want to retool and shake up their core, and that's not at all the position the Caps are in. Not to mention how much of a dick move it would be to Ovie to trade away his two Russian buddies.

If this happened, there's no chance we'd have the money to re-sign Fiala, Kaprizov, and (to a lesser extent) JEE. There's not enough money coming off the books (Hartman, Dubnyk, and Hunt since Foligno soundss like he's sticking around) to account for their raises and also fill those holes in the roster.

With Staal, Dubnyk, Hartman, Foligno leaving and after just buying out Rask I think you'll have no problem to sign these guys. They'll free up to $13M in cap space. That is absolutely enough to re-sign these guys, unless they go mad and score 80 points a year each. Then there might be some trouble looming in.

But yeah if the money becomes a greater issue, then scrap that CAR trade...
