Sharks add big time depth

Created by: AllJonedOut
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 5, 2020
Published: Aug. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
My thinking.

Sharks have the big guns. Couture, Hertl, Burns, EK65, EK9 and Timo. They need depth. Good depth

I feel like I added around the big guns up top good depth to really form a good top 6 and a better bottom 6. I love that defense. You have ek65 and Dillion back. A shutdown pair and a awesome 2way pair at the back end.

And too top that the goaltending is better and. We have 9 picks this year.

If things go right for the sharks. They could be back to serious contender status.

1.
SJS
  1. Abdelkader, Justin
Additional Details:
The wings get a guy who could be there number one but at least will get games out of him. Unlike abdelkader who is a healthy scratch. Jones will provide a goalie who has starter ability and maybe a change of scenery and long break to refresh would get him back to a solid goalie.

But otherwise it’s a risk for either team but the wings also get a pick to sweeten there pot.

Additional Details:
Ottawa takes a chance on a guy who if plays good can flip for a better pick. Similar to the Namestick deal

I know we just signed extended him but this is a armchair GM.

I really just dont see the Leafs moving Johnsson for another player unless its in a larger deal for a dman. Leafs have so many forwards

Interesting Detroit trade...I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it.

It's better in the short term because Abdelkader's contract expires sooner and we'd be saving about 2.5 million but burying him in the minors also means he will have no NHL impact and that $3 million contributing to the cap is completely dead. If Jones returns to form, even somewhat, this could look bad. But if Jones continues to suck in Detroit, this could end up being a win. I dunno!

I don't think Detroit does it, we are comfortable having Abby in the minors, we have plenty of cap space, and it wouldnt surprise me if he retired before his contract was up.

I find that hard to believe. I things that make these recent rebuilds so awesome if that they some structure so the the young guys aren’t thrown into the fire. I.E Ottawa. You guys have the forwards and a couple of d-man but no clear guy for the number one. (Probs will be like the leafs and get a guy). But for the next two years of finishing up the sucky years of the rebuild. He is good stopgap and there’s a chance he works out to be a stud

Wings are not taking on cap and longer length of contract for Abdelkader. Jones shows no signs of returning to form after two years and the extra year plus the extra money hurt this deal even more.

Wings are much better off rolling with Bernier. Jones has been basically the worst goalie in the league for 2 straight years and is on a horrible contract.

Also LOL. *checks notes. Signed for big money through age 40, is already 35, saw a massive drop off in offensive and defensive production this year.

Not to mention that he has a 3 team no trade clause, and thinking that Winnipeg is one of those teams is kind of laughable.

Leafs need to move cap. Seeing the playoffs, Johnsson is the likely one to go now

Lol. Guy is on average for 52 points and is a liability. You do realize burns didn’t decline physically at all and was on the 3rd worst team in the national hockey league. With the most d zone starts of his defense career. And to top that his d partner was injured for the first 2.5 months which didn’t help.

And as a man who watched burns 70 times this year. He did everything that Brent Burns does just on a team that was to put it nicely, Bad. Was he 16-17 Burns? No but he was also wasn’t on a team going to the Stanley Cup Finals

Edit: earlier I said 2 Norris Trophy he has 1. My bad.

I mean you could flip him. The sharks want to keep as many draft selections as possible. You guys are getting a very solid bottom 6 guy who saves you 2 mil.

I'm not sure where it was that I said that he was a liability? I said that he saw a massive drop off in offensive (84 pts to 52=32 points) and defensive (a significant drop in Corsi%, some of which could be attributed to dZs%). He also had a goalie that was a sieve, so that's completely fair.

I'm always curious though for fans that defend the value of their players when a group of people disagree with them-If you think that Burns from age 35-40, at $8 mil/year (or $7 if you're retaining) is valuable, why wouldn't you just keep him?

The sharks have the big guns. Couture, Hertl, Karlsson, Kane and Meier. They need depth. Badly. This season we were so injured Barlcay Goodrow was our no.1 center for 3.5 weeks before he was dealt. We need picks and depth. And getting out of vlasic would cost to much so that leaves burns out sadly. He is a sick player. It was said he was the runnerup for the captain position. He is sick player and I still believe he is worth money.

Players get old. They decline. Every single one of Burns numbers declined this year. Regardless of whether it was the team, or him starting to regress, taking on 5 years of a player that's over 35 is pretty much hockey suicide unless you're sending a big contract back the other way.
