Description

So in this scenario the Jackets win the 1OA pick. However, this trade still could happen even if they do not. Calgary fans may think the return is too low but this trade is more about Calgary getting low cost quality compared to low cost futures. This is important to keep in mind considering the cap will likely not go up for probably at least three years. Korpisalo is a better goaltender than anyone they have on their roster. Talbot is on the wrong side of 30 and will be looking for more money than what Korpisalo is going to be receiving for the next two seasons. Rittich isn’t just not very consistent and he becomes an UFA after next season. Korpisalo solves that problem. Calgary also faces an issue in defense. They are likely going to lose Brodie and need help on the backend to help replace not only him but Hamonic who they will most likely lose as well. Nutivaara is a quality defenseman who can play his off hand and also play LD. He is buried on the depth chart currently in Columbus will gladly take an opportunity to get more playing time. He, too, is signed for more than just next season and that helps buy Calgary time to develop prospects while remaining competitive. Anderson is the wild card as he helps Calgary with quality top 6 help at RW a place that Calgary really wants to get better at. He does need a new contract but he could be a high reward player at relatively low cost for at least next season.

Columbus gets Gaudreau to help create offense for a team needing quality scoring. Long term the Jackets would be able to fit Johnny hockey contract under the cap that will remain flat and he also would get the benefit of playing closer to home.

Agreed... I'd expect that if you are signing him for 5.5 mil you'll be getting him on a 2 year bridge deal. Realistically, you should sign him 8 years and the good news is that in this scenario, you have some space to work with.

For about the millionth time, you don’t get to win the 1OA trade for a player that is 90+ pt producer and NOT include it as part of the package. I’ve railed against Gaudreau probably more than anybody and no way does CAL make that trade. It might have to be the 1OA for Gaudreau straight up but CAL isn’t going to make a deal if that is in CBJ possession. Also come on 5.5M for PLD? The starting point is probably 2M aav higher.

One thing you must understand is that with the current cap situation teams are going to make moves that seem out of the ordinary. Calgary has some cap issues and Gaudreau is not likely to sign long term in Calgary. While they may be able to get a better futures package for him, Calgary would be better off with a package that gives them quality help now.

Korpisalo has been a god in this series. Change it to Merzy imo

Also I think the focus needs to be on grabbing another higher end top 6 center as opposed to a higher end winger.

I’d rather not add Gaudreau tbh. I think we’re fine on the wings. Let’s see what Laf could bring (if we get him) and Grigorenko, Foudy or Texier could bring as a second line center. Let’s see what the young team can do before making some crazy trade that sends Korpisalo out of town, he seems to want to play in Columbus or else he could have taken such a sweet extension. He’s shown he’s a true number 1 in this playoff series vs Toronto. Tbh he’s the only reason we aren’t down 2-0 in this series.

I understand all of that. I also am definitely not a CAL or Gaudreau fan, but you aren’t getting their best player not giving up a premium asset. What teams are going to do isn’t sell short on players it’s give existing FA’s shorter tighter deals so they maintain cap flexibility. As for “you people over valuing players” what about all of I dislike Gaudreaus game didn’t you understand. I wouldn’t trade for him at all.
