Major Off Season Shakeup Montreal - Leafs Side

Created by: Campabee
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 5, 2020
Published: Aug. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Other moves can be made obviously. This was just to outline what the D could look like with Petry. Which is a very good looking D IMO coupled with the strong top 6 this team looks solid.

also the long term outlook next season has 17+ Mil cap space with the 6 Mil extension to Petry that leaves 11+ Mil for Hyman, Anderson, Korshkov and Barabanov which should be more than enough to keep the big two with some minor moves.

1st: Petry ain't Plekanec.. won't be traded to TOR
2nd: I don't like Nylander.. but I would give you Domi for it.

Not worth it for Toronto. Maybe if Petry was 24 years old.

Petry is on the decline and Nylander is still improving so it would have to be a no.

6M and 4 years for Petry ?? He's really good but even Montreal is not interested into keeping him at this price seriously. We already have an aging Weber with a huge contract. We don't need another one with Petry. If he wants to stay in Montreal, he should look for a 4-5M/3years contract.

LMAO! Petry is NOT on the decline, I don't even know how you can say that and expect to be taken seriously. He plays over 25 minutes a night, had a career year last season and is still a great skater with a shot that rivals Weber's. I would rather keep Petry at 6 Mil for 4 years than Weber at 7+ for 6 more years but Weber will retire a Hab.

Wow that's an easy no. Nothing against Petry at all, very good player. But no.

What in your opinion would need to be added? Cause at the very least I think it is a very solid base and fit for both teams.

I just honestly don't think there's a realistic deal to be had with that base. The age gap is just too significant between the two centerpieces. Again, Petry is a very good player, but for how much longer is that going to be true? It's too hard to predict if a player will age gracefully and have a slow and steady decline, or if they'll just fall off a cliff. Leafs can't afford to take that risk, imo.

That's a fair enough assessment, thanks for the insightful feedback instead of just being a D*** about it.

I was a bit of a dick right off the hop; sorry about that. Felt bad about my first comment - just in one of those moods today. Even just this small exchange cheered me up significantly, so the thanks goes to you.

issue is Petry's age. You don't give up a young star for a 32 year old not named Sidney Crosby

My thinking was trying to help fill both teams need and remain close to fair value. The rest of the rationale was that at some point in the 4 years of Petry's extension Liljegren would pass him and take over the top pairing and Petry would still be a viable 2nd pairing guy cause even if his skating and offensive side fade he is still very sound positionally to play 2nd pairing in that scenario.

He's 32, 99.9% of the time players don't get better as they continue to age into their 30s. this would be a steal for the Habs, you get way more prime years out of Willy than Petry, Also Nylander has term left on a good value deal

I mean you were kind of a D*** about it when I gave my honest opinion.

Marner is getting moved before Nylander.

oh I know. And if Petry was like 27 even I'd probably do it
