Pulling a Detroit

Created by: Leafs_and_Sens_Fan
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 5, 2020
Published: Aug. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Carter Hutton isn't the goalie he once was. If he improves he can be traded out for a pick. If he doesn't play well we keep playing him. That is the strategy Detroit used with Jimmy Howard in order to help them tank to the bottom of the league.

Okposo's contract is worse than Zaitsev's but in Ottawa's situation it might be okay to switch contracts because Zaitsev's contract lasts for 4 years whereas Okposo's contract lasts for 3 years; I don't see Ottawa going anywhere near the salary cap within the next 3 years.

I could see you getting more value if you keep Zaitsev and simply take on Okposo. A lot more, that contract is dreadful. Or is there a major question regarding whether Melnyk will allow taking on cap dumps?

Okposo would waive he’s still a really good 4th liner, plus they don’t need anymore bad RHD. But a Hutton to Ottawa could make some sense.

Zaitsev's contract is pretty terrible as well. I was shocked when Ottawa took it. He's like Cody Ceci except signed to a lot more years.

Just to be clear. You guys are paying for a Hutton-Nilsson swap. Nilsson is a solid 1b goalie; Hutton sucks (which is why I get him in this ACGM).

Yeah I saw that, but Okposo wouldn’t waive his no trade clause.

Not bad. I don’t think the Oilers do that trade, but the other 2 look good.

I like the Galchenyuk signing idea for OTT. Good risk/reward for all parties if he gets 18-20 minutes in the Top 6. Could find his game and be converted into a nice draft pick or two via a deadline trade in the next 2 years.

I can see him waiving. It's not like Buffalo's a cup contender. Plus he might play better in Ottawa and get more minutes considering their lack of stars (other than Chabot and Tkachuk).

He gets money and playing time. Ottawa gets a shot at him improving and becoming worth something plus he fills in a roster spot if they trade Tierney.

Maybe, but he has a family and lives full time in Buffalo I doubt that happens.

Hutton has an eye problem, one eye is moving slower than the other, he's doing things to correct the situation but if he can't I suspect he's out of hockey, if he can get his eyes 100% I'd rather keep him.

What if his eye doesn't improve? He's still gonna play out his contract; he's still a mediocre backup goalie.

If the eye doesn't improve he's on long term IR

No lol. He can play with the eye condition. He proved that this season.

people have played hockey with broken bones in the past, doesn't mean they can't go to IR, They found out Hutton had a medical condition and he can absolutely go to IR if not corrected.

Would an Eriksson/Gaborik swap lessen the cost Vancouver would have to pay to move Eriksson? I know Gabo has 1 year compared to Erikssons 2, and is on LTIR. But for only $2 million and change more, Ottawa would get a player who can be a bottom 6 for the next 2 seasons.

No, Gaborik is being paid by insurance and costs nothing to the cap. There's absolutely no reason to move him.

The only guy I would want to move out on the Sens is Zaitsev because he has 4 years left.

Eriksson + Beagle + Roussel for Zaitsev?

Vancouver saves 7.5M for first 2 years but pays Zaitsev 4.5M for the last 2 years.
