My Ideal Lines For Next Game

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 5, 2020
Published: Aug. 5, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Honestly, I think the Leafs are finished with Muzzin out. He eats a ton of minutes and plays a huge role in shutting down the opponent's top line. Now, the Blue Jackets will have an easy time getting in on the forecheck and maintaining a cycle.

I think Dermott is the best option at this point to take his spot. His anticipation has been suspect at times, but his overall body of work in terms of preventing shots and scoring chances have looked good in a third pair role. No idea how it translates to the top 4 though. Also, I doubt it would happen but I'd prefer to play Sandin over Marincin. To me, Sandin has so much more ability.

I would like to see more aggressive adjustments from the coach. For example, Marner has been useless for like the last 20+ games yet he continues to see top line minutes and special teams on a consistent basis when the truth is, he shouldn't even be dressing. I know last game he had a bit more jump and created a few chances, but something is still off with him. He's got 0 points in his last 6 games, the coach needs to send him a message even if he's one of the best and highest paid players on the team. I honestly think they're gonna trade him this offseason cuz they can't afford holding onto someone so detrimental.

What'd y'all think?

You take Marner off the power play if you really want to send him a message, you don't bench him in a best of three. That is insane.

Besides he looked good when reconnected with Matthews

marner was very good on PK in game two, i dont think the PK does as well without him. definitely goofs on the PP and for the money that shouldnt happen as often as it does, but you cant bench him. johnsson not healthy yet so youd have to move kappy into top 6 when that 3rd line has looked decent so far

Glad you are not the GM or coach of the Leafs because the decision to scratch one of your top players for a must win playoff game makes no sense. Total disagree with your opinion on Leafs being done without Muzzen as their defence core is far better than your are giving them credit.

The issue is not just on the powerplay. Yesterday, he had a few blunders there but he also created 2-3 of the few chances he generated in that situation. It’s just an inconsistent effort all around. He handles the puck & distributes it like a grenade which is unlike him at all. IDK when Johnsson will be ready but if he comes back, he should replace Marner.

The struggle will be finding a team that will take him with his contract. Everyone says that Nylander’s contract is terrible, but Marner’s is much worse

to me it looks like he is thinking and processing the gamer faster than he needs to and his hands have a hard time catching up. hes had his fair share of bad/real bad games, but he has been better with AM and hyman. I think he'll show how game breaking he can be in these next games coming up. if the leafs cant get him going offensively the rest of this series, boy is this gonna be hard to watch. i believe he has it in him though.

marner in a bad season can produce beyond anyone on your team's roster. if toronto sells, teams will buy.

but toronto isn't selling him. you don't give up on a player after one bad year.

marner's is bad regarding his inconsistency for sure. contracts like those need to be a slam dunk. I dont think a majority of people find Nylanders contract to be terrible. his comparables are lower for higher points which stinks, but if he consistently gets 30-35 goals a year from here on out, that contract is obviously fine.

Marner as a healthy scratch... Get real man...

I understand his contract sucks... he got overpaid. But not playing him because he is overpaid by a couple million is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. He's still one of the best players in the NHL.

You put in a guy who hasn't played in how many months? Instead of a top 20 winger...

Why on earth would you scratch Marner for Johnsson? Johnsson hasn’t played an actual game in months

I'm not suggesting to scratch him because he got overpayed. It's cuz his play in this series has not warranted for him to get a spot in the starting lineup. As the coach, he has to be aggressive and make adjustments when things aren't working. Don't be afraid to bench your top guys to send a message.

Yes but it’s not enough to justify his cap hit. He mostly scores with an extra attacker on the ice and can’t carry his own line.
