He's at best a bottom pair penalty killer who isn't a great skater and has no offense. For all the defenceman TO has, Mayfield is closest to Marincin. He isn't on a great contract, he's paid accordingly. This is a bad deal.

If he went to TOR yea he would be paid accordingly but in a system like they have on the island Mayfield is the perfect defenseman, hence why he has been racking up the most minutes

He's nothing special. He's a #6/7 defenceman, I wouldn't want his contract being higher than 1 mill. The Isles can keep him

Mayfield hasn't played outside the top-4 of a Barry Trotz defense in two years. He's absolutely a #4 and should be paid a lot more than he is. This is a bad take.

In this proposal TO keeps Johnsson who is much better than Mayfield. Mayfield is just right handed and people go nuts over right handed defenceman.

He isnt a good skater. Hes a bad puck mover and he doesnt defend his line well. His neutral zone defense is worse then it looks because Trotz doesnt want guys stepping up and forcing dump ins but even with his long reach it still would be below average. In a system like NYI, CBJ, Dallas and Minnesota to an extent he would fit in because they so call "park the bus". That means those teams load up the slot and net front area in a box shape with all 5 skaters to prevent any high danger shots. They give up a ton of shots but it's a very risk free system for teams with less skill.

Mayfield is very good in that system because hes strong, has the ability to box guys out, block shots and that sort of thing that the defensive coaches like Torts and Trotz love but the way the nhl is trending most teams are prioritizing speed, the transition game and puck possession. Because he doesnt have those skills that most teams are looking for he would end up sticking out like a sore thumb.

I'm a leafs fan so Ive got an example. think of tyson barrie, he plays the way the leafs management thinks hockey should be played. Hes weak defensively and not strong at all. He doesnt worry about defense but he does what dubas/keefe want Out score your problems. He would provide something the islanders dont really have in a 1 dimensional offensive RD but he doesnt have the skills to fit into their system at all. Hes weak so he isnt able to box guys out, doesnt stay back at all and is horrible at preventing any sort of pre shot movement. Barrie on the isles would give them something they dont have just like mayfield on the leafs but in both situations the teams wouldnt be getting the type of player they needed
