IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE

Created by: AlphaHockey65
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 6, 2020
Published: Aug. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team is about to get upset by the 24th seed Montreal Canadiens. It's time to get down to what this team needs to do in order to get the most out of the final years of Sid & Geno.

#1: Buyout Jack Johnson. This is so obvious and glaring. You will not find a trade partner to take this bum without sweeting the pot...a lot. The last resort is needed now and that is a buyout. This causes about $1-1.16 in cap penalties until 2025-26 but it's the price we have to pay for a huge GMJR mistake.

#2: Let Schultz walk. Schultz was a big part in our cup wins but he has declined massively. He makes a lot more mistakes and simply cannot be trusted to run in the top 4 D of this team. The bigger picture needs to be seen here. Let another team give him 6.5 mil.

#3 Trading Matt Murray: While this is a bit controversial, the cap crunch makes going into next season with 2 goalies a task we cannot afford. The obvious choice here is to move 2 time Stanley cup champion Matt Murray. I do think a team bites on this. An RFA goalie with playoff experience and looking to rebound. The best bet is that we get a late 1st round pick (ex: Andersen trade) from a team with dire need of goaltending.

#4: Fire Mark Recchi: The PP has been abysmal and this is largely in part with Mark's inability to run a powerplay. Let Jacques Martin do more of the work and find someone to replace Kessel's spot.

Trades
1.
PIT
  1. Brodin, Jonas
  2. 2020 4th round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
The Wild have 2 goalies heading into their late 30s. I really think Dubnyk is finished and Stalock is good enough to continue backing up Murray.
Bill Guerin is familiar with the Stanley Cup goaltender and could give him a look
MIN
  1. Murray, Matt [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
While I do see Murray being worth a 1st, I think the Pens look for help on the blueline in exchange for Murray.
Brodin is a very decent LD on an expiring contract who we can use to make a cup run.
They send a 4th round pick as well.
2.
PIT
  1. 2021 6th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Late round pick in return for a player Winnipeg knows fell out of our depth chart and has injury history but who could rebound with a solid season
WPG
  1. Bjugstad, Nick ($1,625,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Winnipeg could use a C who can slot into their top 6 when needed. We retain to keep his cap hit under 3 mil.
3.
PIT
  1. 2020 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Exchange of picks.
Most likely 15th overall: Could end up being Dylan Holloway/Jack Quinn
MIN
  1. 2021 1st round pick (PIT)

Yes

(Tho I highly doubt MIN gives up Brodin for Murray, and wouldn't be shocked to see Demelo get double that)

For point number 3 I challenge you to find a team with a late round 1st (meaning that they got far in the playoffs) that also needs a goalie.

The only way I see Minnesota doing this is if they know they won't sign Brodin and want immediate cost-controlled younger goaltending

I took that into account and instead looked for the Pens to bolster their blueline.

I thought so too but with the pandemic and the cap frozen, I don't see teams being eager to overpay in FA

But they'll overpay in trades???

Winnipeg passes on Bjugstad and signs DeMelo 3x2...

Sure. But this depends on how confident you are on Bryan Little being healthy because the C depth on the Jets is pretty thin.
3 mil in cap space makes it rough as well

Calgary and Carolina come to mind. Any team that passes the first round has a late first. (24-31).

Exactly what I was thinking 😂😂 I’m like I’m offering Domi for Brodin, they won’t take Murray for Brodin if they don’t take Domi 😂

WPG have better option out there ( Domi D.R.Strome Cirelli )

I’ll counter with Carson Soucy for Murray and a 4th.
