Isles 2020-21

Created by: slapshot723
Team: 2020-21 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 5, 2020
Published: Aug. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
TRADES
BUF-NYI Trade: Sabres get a top-4 defenseman, Isles get a young NHLer with ties to the organization and save cap space. Thompson could potentially take over Cizikas' spot in 2021-22 as the 4C if Cizikas isn't re-signed.

DET-NYI Trade: Red Wings get a prospect and a 2nd round pick in exchange for taking on a worse contract. Isles buyout Abdelkader, but lose Ladd's contract and gain significant cap space.

SJS-NYI Trade: Sharks get two NHL players at league minimum contracts who could use a change of scenery to find success. Isles get a depth center, which has been an issue organizationally.

COL-NYI Trade: Avalanche get a strong bottom-6 player and good prospect. Isles get a young versatile NHLer with a great pedigree, and gain cap space. The versatility Jost brings is important to NYI, who need more players who can play center or wing when needed.

RFA SIGNINGS
Mat Barzal: Signs a two-year bridge deal similar to Laine. At the time his contract expires, plenty of contracts will be off the books (Boychuk and Komarov, and Varlamov will have just one year left and may be going to Seattle).

Ryan Pulock: Similar to contract to Justin Faulk, around the same level of player (even though it looks like Faulk had a bad year).

Devon Toews: Similar contracts to Rasmus Andersson and Marcus Pettersson, around the same level of player.

Tyson Jost: Signs a two-year bridge similar to Sonny Milano, another young NHLer who has shown flashes of their pedigree, but is still figuring it out.

Isles also re-sign Andy Greene, who has looked good as an Islander and can play bottom pair with the young Noah Dobson.

Literally said about every single RFA last year, and most of them did take bridge deals. Given the pandemic and the flat cap, I'd be more surprised if he didn't take a bridge deal. He'll make a lot more in two years.

COL doesnt need a bottom 6F, they already cant fit Jost as it is.

Honestly I think Bode and the 3rd is probably enough anyway (as COL was looking for a 2nd + 3rd and Bode = 2nd)

Ho-sang is already in the KHL, and Dal Colle isnt much of an NHL player at all. Sharks will pass as Gambrell still has a chance at being decent in the league

“He’ll make a lot more in two years”. Bro. Habs could offer sheet him for 6x11mil. He is not making more in two years

I would take this as is also, Ladd is essentially the same as Abbie and we get a 2nd in a deep draft as well as a good prospect

Leddy isn’t a cap dump - he’s one of the better transition Dmen in the NHL. Isles will have no problem moving him this offseason, it doesn’t have to be to buffalo

So what you’re saying is COL rejects because you think the NYI are overpaying? COL takes that deal and can give away Clutterbuck if so inclined.

Bro, he doesn't have to accept an offer sheet. The exact same things could be said about Brayden Point last year, and he took a three-year bridge.

Done. I see a future with Bellows, but not with Salo, so that makes more sense from an NYI perspective.

Sure, just mentioning Buffalo really does not need him. They have a lot of young defensive prospects that could be ready to make the jump very quickly. They certainly don’t need a big salary like that the blocking them. They’ll have to pay Dahlin and Jokiharju soon.

Not saying COL says no at all.
Saying remove Clutterbuck or only accept if they know 100% they can flip him out of town as I want nothing to do with him and that cap hit

I saw a few of the Isles to Detroit trades and some of the fans didn't want to give up Bellows I think Detroit is better off trading for a d-prospect. Then they take a forward in the draft.

Isles can't do it without Colorado taking salary. Not sure why you wouldn't want him. You have the cap space and he fits in your lineup really well.

no no no lol.
COL doesnt have room on their bottom 6F hence why they move Jost in the first place (cuz they dont have room for him).
Clutterbuck isnt a good fit at all. Hell be entering next year at age 33 with 2yrs term overpaid at 3.5mil per for a 4th liner.
COL does have cap space but doesnt mean you should spend it foolishly. There are other cheaper options for a 4C in UFA, not to mention they have pieces internally (ie. Bowers/Kamanev) to fill that spot at a better $$$ value

Seems a little light for Ladd, not that I'm complaining, but the Abdelkader buyout is fairly cheap. Bellows and the 2nd are nice assets, but Ladd's contract is not pretty

The Colorado trade is interesting and well thought out. Jost would be a really good fit there (IMO). That said, I'm not sure I would do it, as I don't have a lot of confidence that Wilde turns into what the Avs need and Clutterbuck doesn't really add much value. Jost is important to Colorado for the same reasons he would be important to the Isles.

That's fair. I think Clutterbuck is a little better than what you're saying, but I don't disagree with your post.

COL is awesome, btw. I went to the Nashville blowout game in November on a work trip. Great fans and building.

Only difference is I believe if you put Abdelkader out or Ladd out healthy, Ladd can be better. A healthy Ladd wouldn't play 49 games and only get 3 assists, even at this stage of his career. He just doesn't fit with this team at all and we need the cap space.
