Initial Creation Date: Aug. 5, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
TRADES
BUF-NYI Trade: Sabres get a top-4 defenseman, Isles get a young NHLer with ties to the organization and save cap space. Thompson could potentially take over Cizikas' spot in 2021-22 as the 4C if Cizikas isn't re-signed.

DET-NYI Trade: Red Wings get a prospect and a 2nd round pick in exchange for taking on a worse contract. Isles buyout Abdelkader, but lose Ladd's contract and gain significant cap space.

SJS-NYI Trade: Sharks get two NHL players at league minimum contracts who could use a change of scenery to find success. Isles get a depth center, which has been an issue organizationally.

COL-NYI Trade: Avalanche get a strong bottom-6 player and good prospect. Isles get a young versatile NHLer with a great pedigree, and gain cap space. The versatility Jost brings is important to NYI, who need more players who can play center or wing when needed.

RFA SIGNINGS
Mat Barzal: Signs a two-year bridge deal similar to Laine. At the time his contract expires, plenty of contracts will be off the books (Boychuk and Komarov, and Varlamov will have just one year left and may be going to Seattle).

Ryan Pulock: Similar to contract to Justin Faulk, around the same level of player (even though it looks like Faulk had a bad year).

Devon Toews: Similar contracts to Rasmus Andersson and Marcus Pettersson, around the same level of player.

Tyson Jost: Signs a two-year bridge similar to Sonny Milano, another young NHLer who has shown flashes of their pedigree, but is still figuring it out.

Isles also re-sign Andy Greene, who has looked good as an Islander and can play bottom pair with the young Noah Dobson.

To put it briefly, I like it but I'm dubious of the COL and DET trades. I don't think Colorado would want to take Clutterbuck, although valuewise I think the trade is fair and the package to take Ladd seems a little light, even with us taking Abdelkader back.

All of that said, this looks pretty good, and there's some space to play with still to add on to contracts if necessary

Only difference is I believe if you put Abdelkader out or Ladd out healthy, Ladd can be better. A healthy Ladd wouldn't play 49 games and only get 3 assists, even at this stage of his career. He just doesn't fit with this team at all and we need the cap space.

This is true. If he's healthy he's probably an okay veteran for your 3rd line, which Detroit could use. Price tag is just a little steep is all.

Seems like based on feedback you're right on the COL trade. I'm surprised they're so against taking on Clutterbuck (which I'm guessing they'd feel the same on Komarov), but I get it. The DET trade seems fair though, taking Abdelkader and buying him out is good for us, and the Red Wings having a veteran who can actually play is good for them, along with getting a prospect and a pick. If they want Salo instead of Bellows, by all means let's do it.

I'm also surprised on the Sabres response to the Leddy trade. He's still a top-4 defenseman, and BUF has insane cap space and no defensemen.

The SJS trade is a variation of many proposals made by Sharks fans. They want either Dal Colle or Ho-Sang or both, and they consistently offer Dylan Gambrell and/or Marcus Sorensen, both of whom would be great fits on NYI. I chose Gambrell because we need more centers and right-handed players.

Not saying COL says no at all.
Saying remove Clutterbuck or only accept if they know 100% they can flip him out of town as I want nothing to do with him and that cap hit

Ok. But it isn’t the worst contract in the world, and I probably like Wilde a lot more than you.

I like Wilde too but not if we are stuck with Clutterbuck and that cap hit for 2 years.

Seems a little light for Ladd, not that I'm complaining, but the Abdelkader buyout is fairly cheap. Bellows and the 2nd are nice assets, but Ladd's contract is not pretty

a 2nd, Salo and Ladd for Abdelkader and 4th seems pretty good to me.

The clutterbuck contract is not big deal, 3.5mill for 2 years minus what jost would make is more like adding 1.5mill then take off neito's 2 and you're playing with house money.. and if you dont want to carry him in the Last year because you have makar and landy they can always buy him out... it would be worth it to grab wilde to have in the system

Sharks decline, Ho-sang is going to the KHL and Dal Colle (while drafted very high) doesn't really look any better than Gambrell.

At first (before i saw the trade above) I thought you were talking about the Minnesota Wilde, and I was like "why does an Avs fan like the Wilde?" tears of joy

Anyways, Bode Wilde is good but this trade isn't great. Jost is worth a 2nd + 3rd imo, and Wilde is probably worth about a pick where he was drafted (early 2nd) given that he had a bit of a down year. So Jost for Wilde + 3rd seems reasonably close to fair value, even without taking on that bad contract. The fact that Clutterbuck has 2 years left also makes this trade less workable.

I've considered similar deals involving Wilde + Komarov for a 3rd, but the thing with Komarov is that he can be buried without much issue. 2 year cap dumps are really not ideal though either way so it would have to be a trade where NYI gives up value rather than being a 'fair' trade for it to be worth it for Colorado. Capspace in 2021/22 is going to be extremely valuable for us after all.

I think NYI needs to add more in this trade to make it worth it for Colorado. Capspace will come at a premium the next 2 years, and Jost for Wilde + 3rd is not enough to offset Clutterbuck's contract.

It's absolutely enough.. a 20yr 6"2 200lb rhd former high 2nd round pick, a 3rd, and 2 years of a below average player who's still useful for tyson jost, is almost a gift.. I'd rather have wilde than 3 second rd picks because they could all miss.

Remember when boston had 3 picks in the 1st round all in a row, and they missed on 2/3

Wilde is no guarantee to become an NHLer. He struggled in the AHL this year and got sent back to juniors. I do like him though, just don't pretend like he's some sure thing compared to 1st round picks.
