TOR - WSH deal

Created by: Driedger18
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 6, 2020
Published: Aug. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
We all know the Leafs need to trade a forward and with their LW depth I think it’s Johnsson. One deal i think could work is Johnsson for Jensen.

Johnsson has 3 years at $3.4M per year left on his deal while Jensen has 3 years left at $2.5M on his. With a flat cap money is going to be tight for everyone so Washington may not like the money difference but they are getting a player that is 4 years younger and being sold at a discount because of injuries and cap issues.

Washington also has some younger d men that they are trying to get into the lineup and they will also be cheaper then Jensen was(Siegenthaler, Fehervary).

For Toronto this is a player that is right handed, skates well, thinks the game decent and is just a low maintenance player. Played big minutes in Detroit 2 years ago and managed to do well on a brutal team. This year in Washington didn’t seem to go so well so could be an opportunity for both teams to make a swap.

I think this makes a lot of sense tbh. Jensen's defense is pretty solid, but the offense isn't great. My only concern is that he might not fit with Toronto's run-and-gun play style. But I still think it's a deal that could work well for both sides

I've been saying for a while that I think Jensen has the potential to be a nice little under the radar pickup for the Leafs.

All of Jensens numbers suggest he's a good play driver from a chances and goals perspective and relative to his teammates in Detroit 2 years ago he was amazing. He may not be a perfect fit with the leafs style but he's a good skater so even if he's not super offensive he can keep up to the style they want. I also think he could play anywhere in the lineup so if Dermott finally becomes a top 4 option like i think he can be then Jensen can shift to the third pair and dominate against lesser competition.

Seems like one of the most logical suggestions (out of thousands entries) to add a RHD to the Leafs. Good thought Driedger.

I think Jensen would be a great partner for Rielly. I was hoping that Anaheim or Toronto would sign him in the summer when he became a free agent and posted several team constructions doing that, but Washington saw him coming, acquired him at the trade deadline and then immediately signed him to his four-year deal. It's too bad he doesn't seem to have impressed either Washington fans or management.

I don't think he needs to be a perfect fit for their style, but regardless I think he'll fit okay. I think he'd be a pretty good match for Rielly. He doesn't have much experience playing the type of minutes that that would entail, but he has done decently (and amazingly in Detroit relative to his mates as you mentioned) at limiting shots and chances against, while playing against pretty solid levels of competition. That combined with the fact that he's not completely incompetent at the transition game (i.e Hainsey, Zaitsev, etc) and he's very solid on the PK, I think he's worth a gamble.
