Do you really think you’ll have to pay to get rid of Bailey? I feel like he still has some value. I could be wrong

Why not let them take whoever they want and keep the 1st? Who would you be in danger of losing? Apart from a couple of your defenceman and Barzal literally everyone is easily replaceable or exempt?

It's about freeing the cap space. Necessary evil

Need to free some cap space. Thinking he will begin his decline around this time. Thought about paying to free up Varly but Bails has an extra year at $5M cap hit. Also thought it would be easier to replace Bailey with Koivula vs an inexpensive backup goalie

I agree... He and Trotz turned this team around. Kept our major free agents and has shown he's willing to make moves that help the team today.

Not his fault that Barzal, Toews, Pulock, Beau, Pelech and Sorokin are expiring lol

He hired Trotz which was smart but Has made several bad moves since. Giving term to guys who will never love up to it as they age is the exact opposite thing anyone should do in the cap era. The Islanders have more money locked up in guys who are or will be 30 or over than any team in the league. That is the literal definition of future cap hell.

Is the buyout a mandatory for Boychuk? Seems like a ton of dead cap space and actual dollars (11.2M cap space & 7.2M actual dollars). In comparison Marleau was 6.25M cap space and roughly 4M actual dollars.

I think the only way Boychuk waives for Detroit (or any non-contender) is if he knows he will be bought out and free to sign anywhere he wants

What do you value Bellows as pick wise? Late first round? Mid second round? I ask as we’re talking about twice the actual dollars and cap space of Marleau which fetched a first rounder and more teams are in a cap crunch. Keep in mind Bellows isn’t expansion exempt so that could also effect his value to any potential suitor.

Yzerman would not buyout a player that would be on the cap another 4 years. He has stated that he doesn't want to have dead-money on the cap for more than 2 years because of all the RFA contracts then ( in 1 year: Hronek, Lindstrom, Cholowski,Rasmussen then in 2 years: Zadina, Seider, Veleno, McIsaac, and most likely Fabbri since he will be bridged. All the while being able to handle extensions for Larkin, Manth, and Bertuzzi--if any need to be done during that 4 year time frame where buyout money would get in the way of) ,and also time to contention expected they want to be able to add pieces.

I think he moves to trade Zetterberg's LTIR contract for a high pick well before he acquires anyone to buy them out.
