What would I do

Created by: Anus_McLeod
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 6, 2020
Published: Aug. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm sure that not all of this works, but the goal is to go for long term plays in Cirelli and Formenton, while also capping out for one year of Hall and adding picks in what should be more of a certain draft. If Formenton doesn't work, maybe go for Anderson-Dolan or Kupari from LA. The logic is the same for any of them (i.e. the player is being pushed down the ladder in the prospect pool).

Zadorov is signed, which is a play for the expansion draft. Seattle will almost certainly take Zadorov over Johnson, so it is further incentive for Johnson to waive his NMC and allow the team to protect Graves.

Next season Hall, Bellemare, and Calvert are likely replaced by Newhook, Bowers, and Formenton. Zadorov is lost to Seattle and replaced by Byram. The team should have plenty of cap space remaining. In fact, there is literally no cap crunch that I can foresee, unless the young guys blow up.

The future looks like this:

Landeskog, MacKinnon, Rantanen
Formenton, Newhook, Burakovsky
Jost, Cirelli, Nichushkin
???, Bowers, Kaut

Byram, Makar
Girard, Timmins
Graves, Johnson

Grubauer/Francouz

Man idunno about the 10mil x 1 yr Hall thing, too big of a gamble for me.
If im Hall, id accept 8mil x 1yr knowing this is the best chance to win a cup (if winning a cup truely matters to him)

I agree, but they are about to add at least one of Stutzle, Raymond, and Perfetti, and already have Tkachuk at LW. It might be possible. I'll keep on dreaming until I can't, because I really like the fit.

No it isn't. Colorado's state tax rate is 4.63%. Add that players pay taxes in every state they play in make it a very small difference in the end.

It's just one year. The roster is stacked, so no used holding onto the extra $2M for nothing. That said, if he'd take $8M then obviously I'd do that. I maxed it out though for illustration.

I've never really understood questioning someone's desire to win a cup. Yes, Colorado has a good shot, nobody can question that. But the playoffs are a crapshoot. When was the last time the actual best team in the league won?

Most teams are starved for offence. I feel like everyone is undervaluing Hall after a tough season where he was almost a PPG player on one of the worst teams in the league, and then had 35 games playing in a completely different system in Arizona. Guy is worth at least $8 x 6, and probably should get more.

I think its completely legitimate to question if the money and security is more important than winning a cup.
If Joe is smart, he tells Hall that COL is his best chance to win next year and because of that he isnt going to pay a 10mil premium to land him

I guess my point is that I think you can take financial security and also want to win the cup. The playoffs are typically an exercise in what team gets hot at the right time. For all we know, Carey Price could go on a roll for the next month and a half and carry a bad team to the cup (I hope not though...). Does he stand a really good chance in Colorado? Sure. Does he stand a really good chance if he signs for term and dollars with someone (without looking at cap space) like the Bruins, or Stars? Sure.

If I'm Hall's agent and Joe Sakic tries to convince me that a 1/16 shot at winning a cup is worth risking my clients long term earning potential, I'm looking elsewhere. If you want him, pay him. If you don't, don't. Pretty simple.

Ottawa won't part with Formenton unless it's a deal that really knocks their socks off. I know he's just a prospect, but he has all the right tools for todays NHL. Useful impact player for us down the line.

If Ottawa is looking to move on from prospects/young roster players, Balcers is probably the odd man out before Forementon is traded.

I don't see why Ottawa should do this. Compher is fine, but not a player you move Formenton for. If I'm moving Formenton, it's in a package for an impact player, otherwise it doesn't make sense. Trading him for middle six depth doesn't make sense, because that's what he's going to be not that far from now, and he's got a more special skillset that whoever you would hypothetically be trading for. I don't think Colorado has a player that would be worth trading Formenton for, AND that Colorado would be willing to move.

I completely agree with you, but I can't seem to stop posting about it, lol. The feasibility (or more accurately lack thereof) with respect to Formenton is why I mentioned a couple guys from LA in the team explanation above (I think those might be more realistic).

I got two arguments for you:
1) COL chances are closer to 1/8 not 1/16 as theyve got to be a favourite to at least get past the first rd.
2) of those 8 favourites, how many have 8 mil in cap space to spend next season?

Depends on who we're declaring as favorites before the offseason happens?

no it isnt. He would have very similar take-home-income in COL and TBL. Check out the income tax calculator: https://www.capfriendly.com/income-tax-calculator/6000000/avalanche?signing_bonus=0

Would be nice to see him hanging out with Seguin tears of joy

I have no issue with him going to Colorado. I think he'd be a great fit. I just don't see the logic of taking a 1 year deal, unless it's an overpay. I get that it gives you a better chance to win the cup, but, as a guy who has a few injuries in the past, he'd be absolutely screwed if anything happened.

I remember when the Avs signed Kariya. He was coming off of $10 mil/year, and signed cheap to win the cup. Never made the money back.
